On romance, I guess

Have you guys seen the trailer for Away We Go? I am deeply, deeply conflicted.

Because: OMG John Krasinski! OMG John Krasinski with beard and glasses! But wow, so pretentious. But does pretentious definitely preclude quality? And what does a Sam Mendes comedy look like, anyway? And hey, I like Maya Rudolph. And Allison Janney! And the soundtrack, ( Read more... )

I...want to see the movie. A lot. I cannot explain why, but there you go.

And wow. I think your subconscious is...trying to tell you something? Or not.

I think this is reasonable. Half of me is very excited about it, too. The other half is skeptical, but trying to keep an open mind. Also, I feel weird being elitist about things that are, themselves, kind of elitist.

I think your subconscious is...trying to tell you something? Or not.

Yeah, I don't know either. What up, self?

I absolutely think you should see the movie. I enjoyed the heck out of it. If you enjoyed Garden State, you will probably like this one -- it's very similar in tone. It keeps getting promoted as a comedy. Don't get me wrong -- it's funny -- I just don't see it as a traditional comedy. If that makes any sense at all.

HA. WELL. The thing is, I also have crazy mixed feelings about Garden State--there are lots of parts that I like, but I HATE the ending. I love a good love story (you know this), and heaven knows I dig a little mushiness, but the end of GS (from the yelling-on-top-of-the-Dumpster scene on, say) gives me hives. Ugh, so saccharine.

Which, of course, doesn't mean I won't like AWG--it's a whole different movie with a whole different pedigree, of course. And hey, maybe it'll capture the good parts of GS. This is me, expecting to enjoy it.

What, huh? I...do not comprehend. You can handle the saccharine that is Bones but not Garden State?

What, like, the B/B relationship? I've never thought about it.

I will admit that there are rare moments when B and B are almost too much (I would actually place the love scene from the finale in this category--I thought it was entirely too soft-focus for them), but their kind of sweetness is a) tempered by both conflict and humor, neither of which is really present in the ZB/NP relationship (I would say that there is humor in them individually, but not in them together), and b) backed up by such a long history of faithfulness and intimacy that it doesn't strike me that way at all. I would say there are other elements of Bones that are FAR more melodramatic than B/B. Unless that's not what you're talking about?

Heh, ready for another slightly inflammatory statement? I also don't like (most of) Love, Actually.

One of my friends said she really enjoyed it (she saw a sneak preview) and she says she's not generally a fan of Sam Mendes, so...I trust her judgment.

I appreciate this. I'm excited that SM is doing something different--not because his other movies are bad, but they do tend to be sort of similar. And I have to admit: I'm curious about his sense of humor.

(I feel the same way about Wes Anderson's take on Fantastic Mr. Fox, which comes out later this year sometime--I like WA's sensibility, but he's so caught up in his own aesthetic sometimes that I think the departure should be really interesting. FMF is an animated kids' movie based on an old semi-obscure Road Dahl book.)

I went back and watched the trailer, because one of my friends said the same thing about it being pretentious, but I don't see that. What's pretentious about it? I could kind of see it from the hipstery music or the Juno-y animation or even just the association of Dave Eggers with the movie.

I was actually worried about it being too Dave Eggers-y as well, especially the dialogue, but I saw the movie today and liked it a lot. (And the first five minutes or so had me worried.) I wish they had time to flesh out more of the minor characters, but other than that, I thought it was very sweet.

Kind of like Little Miss Sunshine, but a little less quirky, and may be with a bit more focus on main characters, as opposed to an ensemble. But I thought JK and Maya Rudolph did a good job. They both have more acting range than I thought they did.

Sometimes, I am surprised we are friends, because our tastes can be so different. When I read this, my first thought was, "Wait, she doesn't like Dave Eggars?" Because I think he's swell.

I kinda don't like Maya Rudolph though, and am completely neutral on John Krasinksi (but leaning toward, He's cute, but I don't get the hype.)

Hee, yes. Which is especially funny when you realize that, when we first met, we were all, "OMG! We're so alike!" Little did we know. I'm glad we make it work, though. :)

I think he's done some really great things for writing culture in America, via the 826es and maybe also McSweeney's (though I am mad at him for possibly corrupting Nick Hornby), but I find him SO self-important as a writer.

Really? To both of these. More JK for me, then, I suppose.

Ugh, there are only two things that will get me to watch this movie: 1) the promise of all that is Allison Janney, and 2) a stellar movie review from you. Otherwise, it looks horribly pretentious and boring in the most repulsive David Eggers fashion. Bleh.

Well, it's very nice that you think I could change your mind. But I won't count on it.
