Scotch Anyone? Rum Perhaps?

Today's find at a different grocery store: Organic single malt speyside scotch and fair trade rum.  Too bad I don't generally like speysides.

I also discovered, as I wandered around the store, that organic and fair trade product were mixed in with regular stock and they carried their own colour-coded identifiers on the front of the shelf so they ( Read more... )

We're definitely behind you down here, if it makes you feel any better. Only in a Whole Foods or local place will you be able find out anything other than the country of origin of your food. In regular grocery stores, many things don't even tell you that!

Yes,that's how it is in Canada... except that we don't have the equivalent of a Whole Foods and YMMV at local places. Overall, I think North America has a lot to learn from the UK and EU. (Although in fairness, I think the labelling and awareness in the UK came about because of the mad-cow and foot-and-mouth crises of the last few decades, plus they are possibly much closer to the consequences of overfishing.)

Also, I think they're a little more aware on the GMO-front -- there's no requirement to label here, and a generally cavalier attitude towards the possible dangers of GMO seed cross-pollinating and effecting even heritage seeds.
