I think that the meaning of her statement is clear. You may not agree with the statement itself, but there's no need to attack it's clarity. She believes that "the catholic conscience" only serves to inhibit the thoughts and actions of an enlightened soul to the point of imposing an intangible but real death on it.

i love you mendoza. in the vernacular for my friend up there, it means if i am enlightened in MY perception of right and wrong (however right and wrong it may be in itself) then that catholic conscience will most definitely be obliterated because, hell, who put them on the holier than thou side of the playing field?

I think that being raised a Catholic, especially one educated in the parochial school system as I have been, undeniably helps to strengthen and make louder the conscience that is innate to us all. That process, and the Jiminy Cricket it births, is what I identify as my "Catholic conscience."

Is said conscience necessarily right or good? I don't know. I think having a formidable conscience, though, whatever it may tell you, is a sign of life, and is, in fact, a great thing ( ... )
