Shinee: Minho/Taemin
G; Romance, Angst, Fluff(?)
Jinki is a mad professor. Very much mad, but a true genius.
At his young age, he had a number of inventions that could compete with the world’s most renowned scientists. But Jinki’s most prized worked had to be his most recent invention. It was an invention that would surely go down in history.
It was an android. A one-of-a-kind android that can think on its own. It was not a robotic machine that was programmed to do tasks when instructed. But a more-than-a-machine something that was very much human-like.
Or maybe, too human-like.
+
It was named Minho. It looked like a human. It talked like a human, though with a robotic edge to its tone. It was almost human, except for the fact that it had wires inside of it rather than organic material.
Being a machine, Minho was ten times stronger than a human and had a supercomputer for a brain. It didn’t breathe. It didn’t eat. it didn’t sleep. It just recharges.
But there was one thing about the android that baffled even the genius Jinki himself. Minho learned how to love.
+
Taemin usually didn’t go in his hyung’s lab. Jinki never liked any other human being in his lab besides himself (and sometimes the significant scientists that fund his research) anyway. But that day, Taemin happened to dropped by. The reason slipped both of them, the rest of the details were fuzzy anyway.
Minho was still unfinished at the time. But Jinki had the surprise of his life when he noticed the android’s lips tugged into a curious smile as soon as its newly constructed eyes landed on Taemin. It wasn’t a glitch or a wrong tug at a wire or anything like that. It was as if Minho smiled on its own.
+
Almost every day after that, Jinki let Taemin drop by. Forced was the right term, to be honest, but, eventually, Taemin came willingly. There was something curious about the machine-as Taemin labeled it in his head. It wasn’t the fact that Minho acts differently when he’s around. It was because Taemin feels like there’s a heart beating inside that metal chest.
But Taemin knows Jinki would disagree. After all, it was logically impossible.
+
Taemin stared straight into Minho’s eyes, expecting the usual things he sees when he stares into other people’s eyes. Taemin saw nothing but a pair of bright brown eyes staring back at him. There was nothing special about the stare. It seemed blank, really. Yet, it still made Taemin hitch a breath.
“What are you staring at?” Minho asked in its usual monotonic voice yet when it reached Taemin’s ears, it sounds more colorful than any human voice he’s heard.
“Nothing.” The human answered. “It’s just really fascinating… How hyung managed to make you almost human-like.”
Minho raised an eyebrow and Taemin heard the faint whirring of the gears behind the android’s face. “Almost? Why almost?”
He smiled, faintly. “You should take it as a compliment. I meant it as one.”
Minho didn’t answer. Instead, it took Taemin’s hand, raised it up slightly and sized it up with its own. “They’re almost the same size.”
Taemin finally smiled a smile that reached up to his eyes. “Yes, they do.”
“I have hands,” Minho started, “feet, skin, nose, lips, ears, hair, a face, a body… I’m not that different from you.”
Taemin wanted to say ‘yes’ but he knew this was not the right answer. “Except,” He muttered, the corner of his lips drooping down into a frown. “It’s more complicated than that.”
“How complicated?” Minho asked and Taemin didn’t answer. The android placed his hand on the human’s chest and frowned. “Is it because of this?”
Taemin looked up at it and slowly nodded.
Minho closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Taemin. The android could feel the beating of the human’s heart and something in him stirred. Perhaps it was pain but, being unable to feel anything, he wasn’t sure. “I know that I don’t have a heart like yours.” It muttered. “And I probably never will… But that wouldn’t stop me.”
Taemin smiled and let his head rest on the android’s chest. It was hard despite having a synthetic skin armoring it. Yet it felt like the most comfortable place in the world for Taemin.
And then he heard it. It was faint. But Taemin was sure it was there. It was a beating, the same rhythm as his own. When he first heard it the first few times he came around the lab, Taemin gathered his courage and told his hyung about it. But Jinki was adamant that it was impossible. Still, there it was. Faint yet audible. Existing.
And, perhaps,Taemin thought as he snuggled closer to Minho’s chest, We’re not that different after all.
