Patrick Wolf - Seattle concert (part 1)

Jun 08, 2009 00:21

I was so super excited for this, you guys. And it totally exceeded my expectations. I twittered like, the entire time up until Patrick Wolf came on.

4:13pm - Waiting for a bus to take me into seattle for PWOLF OMG.

Finally decided on clothes after changing my shirt about five times. I was very nearly late for the bus. Anyway, my dad picked me up and we found a great parking space close to the venue, and then we went to get tickets.

5:42pm - Found the place and the tourbus, talked to a dude with a ton of tattoos, he was awesome, out at dinner now. Tickets @ 7, show @ 8. \o/

There were a few heavily-tattooed people loading stuff into the venue, and this one dude stopped to talk to us 'cause we probably looked a little lost. I read online that the doors didn't open until 7, but I thought we'd be able to get tickets, at least, y'know? But no, this place is more the kind where you pay the person at the door and they just let you in, or you buy tickets online, which we didn't do. So we chatted with tattoo-guy for a few minutes and decided to go in search of dinner.

7:46pm - http://twitpic.com/6pw7b - Pwolf isnt on til like 11 But ive met a cool goth type dude called guthrie

The place was pretty small, but after all the shit my parents talked about it, I expect something TOTALLY HORRIBLE, and this wasn't at all. It was clean, it was decently lit, the security dudes were nice... My dad and I discussed afterwards that it might've been because it was an all-ages show? Maybe they cleaned up a bit for that, idk. Anyway, it was kind of arranged with the stage, and then the floor, and then this little raised walkway type thing, directly behind which were the merch areas and sound booth. Because this raised area had a railing to lean against, and because I am five feet tall, I stayed up there. I was planning on going down to the pit during PATRICK WOLF OMG! but by that point it got super crowded with tall people and I figured I'd be better off where I could actually see. The dude next to me, Guthrie, was very nice and we chatted a few times, and neither of us moved at all because we didn't want to give up our spots, lol.

There wasn't really anything going on for a while, but the place was pretty full of kids already. I'm horrible and guessing ages, but I'd say the age-range was like, 17-23 or something. For the most part. IDK, I'M CRAP AT THAT. But it was mostly hipster and/or gay kids with funky hair and cool clothes, which was pretty awesome.

7:53pm - @giddy_london i saw him in his bus when the door opened, dude. IM TRYING NOT TO FLAIL AT EVERYTHING.

Yeah, seriously. While me and my dad were waiting in line for the security dudes to check the ginormous backpacks of the kids in front of us, a few people went in and out of the bus (I didn't know at the time, but it was the girls from the Plastiscines), and I glimpsed Patrick! inside just chilling with a water bottle. hahaha it was awesome, shut up.

7:57pm - Mistake no1- wearing pants/skirt with no pockets.

Okay, so: I wore stretchy pants without pockets, and a miniskirt on top (which obviously didn't have pockets either). I brought with me a purse with my phone, camera, and mini sketchbook for autographs or just random ideas or whatever. I also had a jacket. This all sucked badly, because it was super hot in there, and because I had all that shit (ALL OF WHICH WAS USEFUL, JUST SAYIN'), my purse was kind of huge and clunky. So my dad took a load of my stuff and his jacket to the car, which meant no decent pictures of anything before Patrick Wolf.

8:03pm - Band no1- jaguar love?- so far so good.

Jaguar Love. Two dudes from Portland, Oregon (and I think they're based in the Seattle area now? I could be wrong, but I think I heard that somewhere...). The singer, Johnny, is tooooootally adorable. He screamed a lot, but not in a way that was grating, at least not to me, which was good. He has long blonde hair and for most of their set, I couldn't even see his face. hahaha They were cool, though.

8:18pm - Guitarist is pulling some crazy frank moves. Singer is adorable and screamy.

The guitarist, Cody, is pretty adorable too. He wasn't crazy like Frank for most of the time, but every now and then he would just start flying around and pounding on his guitar, and it was totally Frank-type-moves. They were both pretty active, and Johnny liked to climb amps and they looked like they were going to knock themselves out or something, idk. The stage was preeeeetty fucking small, hahaha.

8:28pm - The kinda remind me of msi, actually...

Okay, so they do and they don't. The song I sent this during had a riff that struck me as MSI-ish, it sounded pretty electronic and really cool, and Johnny's voice and Jimmy's voice are... kinda similar? I really don't know MSI well enough to be at all difinitive about this. But they did, kind of, remind me of MSI.

8:37pm - Talked to the singer dude. Totally adorable. they were cool and had some good frank/gee moves, if ya know what i mean. Next up is some french girl band.

Hahaha, okay, so after their set, Johnny came around to the back and hung out at his merch table (dunno where Cody was during this), and he was all sweaty and gulping down water, and there was nobody over there talking to him, so I figured why not? And I went up and said hi. Unfoooortunately, I didn't have my purse, and therefore my sketchbook, so I couldn't get an autograph and I just kind of asked stupid questions and tried not to look like an idiot. He was completely adorable, though, especially with his hair out of his face, hahaha. He told me they'd been a band for two years (and I'm reading now in the little zine thingy that they'd actually been in a band together before that fell apart or something, idk) and I told him I really liked their set and would totally check them out. And I will, 'cause I did like them. Not enough to pay for their CD right then, though. :\

That twitter account is the one I use for RL stuff, so I couldn't say outright that these guys were totally slashy at some points. BUT THEY WERE. And it was just the two of them onstage, so they were playing off each other really well, and they had some definite ~MOMENTS, okay. They even pulled a couple Frank/Gerard moves with Johnny kneeling in front of Cody's guitar, and them screaming at each other, and Johnny being all grabby at Cody's shoulders and even some sort-of-snuggling. IT WAS GREAT.

Oh also, apparently, Johnny does clothing/merch designs for 1) their old band Blood Brothers, 2) their current band Jaguar Love, 3) his clothing company CrystalCityClothing.com, and 4) has designed t-shirts for Panic and Thursday (but not Fall Out Boy - that was a multiple choice question in the zine, lol). Based on this last bit, I hereby welcome them into the fringes of bandom. YES.

8:40pm - http://twitpic.com/6pzpl - Lol kids playing a hand game while the chicks set up.

Plastiscines took kind of a long time to set up and sound check. Well, also, the dudes soundchecked way beforehand and could just come out and play, but the rest of the bands had to come out, set up their gear, and then run through all the sound check stuff. Anyway, they took a while to do that, and I was amused by the kids below me. The game was like, twice as big when it started, but I didn't think to take a picture, lol.

8:58pm - Girls arent bad. I liked the dudes better.

The singer (Katty) started out playing guitar. She... has issues with the guitar, at least in my opinon. She can play, and she can sing, but doing both at the same time looks like kind of a challenge. When she was playing, she was pretty focused on that and singing/relating to the audience/putting on a show all became kind of secondary. On the plus side, they were all really cute.

9:10pm - Drummer looks like a movie star. Theyre all hot tho.

The drummer (Anais) totally reminds me of an actress, maybe an 80s teen star or something, I have no idea, I can't place it. She's really pretty though. The guitarist (Marine) was pretty good, and she kind of carried the show for them while Katty was sort of... too plastic. YES, THAT IS A PUN. SORRY. Anyway, Marine was energetic and bouncing around a bit, so that was very good. Anais looked pretty awesome behind her kit, too. And then the bassist.

9:13pm - Wow this song has some kind of crazy complicated bassline.

This bassline blew my fucking mind, okay. I don't know what song it was (I don't think it was the really catchy one that goes "B-I-T-C-H, I'm a bitch-I-T-C-H", that was cool), but it started out just normal or whatever, the bass all normal-like and everything. Then during the verses (I think it was the verses and not the chorus), the girl (Louise) starts moving her fingers like I've seriously never seen a bassist do. I don't even know, dude, it was insane. It looked more like a guitar move during a solo, or even like... I don't know, some kind of something completely different. It blew my mind. So after I saw that, I pretty much watched her for most of the set. It helped that she was really adorable, too.

And this isn't to say that Katty was bad, but she just didn't hold my interest. She did seem to warm up a little towards the end, though, which was good. It just seemed like the girls weren't as into their performance, especially after the Jaguar Love guys, 'cause maaaan, those guys were WAY INTO IT, and super smiley and passionate and everything, it was great. So after the boys, I think the girls were kind of a letdown. But the weren't bad.

9:23pm - They were cute but the lead singer wasnt the best frontwoman, tbqh.

Yeah, see. Another thing I found kind of annoying about their set was that all their songs just went right into the next one, and it was hard to find the place for applause, and it was hard to keep up, if you know what I mean. There wasn't a rest, really. It just kind of threw me off, and Katty wasn't really dynamic enough to put on the show everybody was looking for, I think.

9:32pm - Still 1 more band to go & it looks like theyre wearing suits. I really liked the jag love dudes. They were superadorable & lookd like they rly love playng tgthr

All the dudes from the last band were wearing black button-down shirts and dark pants, except for one dude who I will go into more detail about in a moment. So I figured, okay, these guys have a uniform, great. They took quite a while to set up as well, and they were a full band with drums, guitar, bass, and keyboard/electronics/whatever.

9:34pm - Lol guitarist looks kinda like bill beckett.

HE DOES, OKAY. This guy was really thin and lanky and had the shoulder-length hair that I associate with William Beckett even when he doesn't have that haircut, and he even had the same facial features, okay. SERIOUSLY.

9:38pm - http://twitpic.com/6q2o4 - Blurry but he totes lookes like b.beckett.

I know, I know, this is a really bad picture, but don't you think he does? At least kind of?

9:50pm - Ok, so the dude is the bassist, whatev. He looks scarily similar to william. Body type and everything.

Ummm, that might give you a clue to how long they took to set up. They were still setting up when I sent that. Not!William played the guitar for soundcheck, so forgive me being confused, lol. But okay, so he was wearing these pinstripe tight pants, and even the way he carried himself reminded me of William, I'm serious. IT WAS WEIRD.

10:00pm - Lololol this band. Idek.

I sent this just about as soon as they started playing. Ohhhh my god. So all the guys were wearing black, right? APPARENTLY NOT ALL! The lead singer hadn't made an appearance until they started playing, and he was wearing this white outfit that reminded me of a Vegas Elvis-impersonator thing, it was kind of weird. And he has this big fluffy hair/afro thing going on, and he's just kind of insane. So he JUMPED OUT, and they guys started playing, and honestly, I can't remember much about their music except that it was kind of crap. It was really really loud and just seemed like noise. :\ :\ :\

10:02pm - Chick from the girl band is hanging out in the back. Im more interested in her than these dudes.

I think this was Louise, the bassist. She was standing like, right in front of me, in front of the railing thing, watching the show. I noticed the other girls and Cody hanging around the back throughout the show whenever they weren't on, which I thought was kind of cool, that they were just standing around with all the kids.

10:07pm - Kinda getting into it... At least this dude knows how to put on a show.

And he really did, I have to give him that. He really involved the audience, and he had way more stage presence than the girls, and he like, talked and joked and teased and everything, and he even jumped out into the crowd for a little while too (which Johnny did as well, if I'm remembering correctly). If only his band were better. hahaha

10:22pm - lol @neverconquered yes i am addicted to twitter. But i am basically leaving myself notes to talk about it later.

Tony teased me about being addicted. BUT AREN'T YOU GLAD I AM? Otherwise I probably would've forgotten things. hahahaha. The last dudes, Living Things, didn't have a very long set, and I think they cut it short because soundcheck was taking so long for everybody, so during this time, I sent my dad out for my purse and by the time he got back, they were done and everybody was glad. It was kind of a different style of music than the other two, and I don't think the kids were as into it, as hard as the frontman tried. Sorry, dude. :\

10:26pm - Autographs: 3/4 of the girl band and the guitarist from the first band. SO FAR. i wanna find that adorable singer again...

Johnny had been hanging out at his merch table, but he disappeared at some point and Cody had stopped mingling and taken his place. So I grabbed his autograph, and he was really nice and adorable. He has cute handwriting, too, and in all-caps. He wrote "Dear Jennifer! Thanx! ♥ Cody" (and what looks like the beginnings of another exclamation point, but he didn't finish. LOL)

10:29pm - The 3 girls were standing RIGHT BEHIND ME for the last bands set. very cute and french, lol. Strong perfume. Hahaha

It was so crazy! I caught sight of Katty's glittery rainbow shirt out of the corner of my eye, and I didn't want to like, turn around and LOOK at them, so I tried to do so casually, y'know? So I knew which girls were there, and they were seriously so close that if I leaned back, I would be leaning into Katty and Louise. The drummer, Anais, was there also, and they made comments in French every now and then, too. hahaha

After the dudes had finished playing, they were still standing there, so I turned around and asked them to sign my book. And this actually happened before I got Cody's autograph, but I didn't feel right texting about it while they were still there, lol. They were really nice, and the drummer was super earnest about it too. Katty wrote "Thanks! Katty xxx", Louise drew a big heart and something that looks like her name, and Anais wrote "Thanks a lot! lots of kisses! ANA xxx" They were pretty adorable close-up, too. And they're all only 21.

10:48pm - Waiting on p.wolfs ppl to set up. Got more crowded, also a slightly older age set. starting to smell like sweat, lol.

It took a while for everyone to strike all the band equipment; the first three bands pretty much just played with everyone's gear up there, and they only added or took away things that were needed or when they needed to make room, so the stage was ind of crowded. But it looked like ALL of that came off (or most of it, at least) and then all of Patrick's stuff had to go on, and then they had to soundcheck it all. The soundcheck didn't actually take as long as the previous ones did, though.

By this point the place had really filled up. During the last band, more people started to filter in, and then it got kind of crowded, which made me decide to stay up against the railing in the back, where I could see over people's heads. Most of the were kids, but I noticed a slightly older age bracket, probably 20s-30s, filling in the back, which was interesting. But more people + dancing = rising temperatures. It was hot the whole time (I don't know why they never turned on the fans hanging from the ceiling... maybe it would make noise? I honestly don't get it), but the heat got kind of oppressive at this point. Plus, everyone was getting super excited.

10:52pm - Violin girl is pretty.

Which I already knew, but she really is very pretty. She came out breifly to soundcheck her and Patrick's violins (fiddles? WHATEVER, I can't tell the difference), and I kind of really love her a lot. And what is her instrument, is it just an electric violin? It looks kind of freaky and skeletal, but also awesome, hahaha. Anyway, she and the other guys came out for a few minutes and then disappeared again.

And then, at 11pm (or so my dad tells me; I wasn't watching the clock), IT STARTED.
