Things I Hate about Fanfic

May 16, 2010 15:18

Let me first begin by saying I love fanfic. It’s not my guiltiest pleasure, but it’s one of my favorites. There’s nothing like reading a well-written fic to fill in the blanks left by your favorite show. And who doesn’t like smut…? But there are some really unconscionable things I see going down in fanfic, and I’d like to get them off my chest:

1. ( Read more... )

oh look another fandom, i need a time out, fanfiction

Yeah, I've seen the song!fics... I have to say they're low on my list of things I can swallow, but at least they're tolerable when labeled as such. Barely.

"Tell me what should happen next?"
I always want to tell those people, "You sit down and figure out where your plot is going!" ;)

You sure? GY's actions suggest otherwise! ;)
He doesn't negotiate so much as antagonize, imo.

That's nice! I always want to tell them something like "There's an explosion, they're all dead, so please stop writing."

He does in his usual interaction with fans, but I was referring to the mole hunt. You give me reviews, I give you a new chapter. You give away your spoiler source, I'll give you an autograph from Hugh Laurie. Same difference, except that GY's awards are better! ;)

Makes you wonder about the quality of the information he received, doesn't it? Next year, no doubt there will be a post on his Twitter account saying false alarm, as it turns out, there were no WMDs.

Everything you said is perfect true and should be tattooed on the heads of those who refuse to do as you say.

I can add some more.

1. Being forced to friend a person just to read their fic because they f-lock it, even though they linked to it from a community. What's the purpose of this? To gain friends? HELLO, THERE ARE FRIENDING MEMES FOR A REASON.

2. Epithets. I HATE epithets. Is Wilson really going to think of House as "the blue-eyed doctor"? Is House really going to think of Wilson as "the oncologist" or "the younger man"? I doubt it, unless they have Alzheimer's and can't remember who their best friend is.

3. Slash, wherein Wilson needs to have his inner vagina removed. Or just slash in general - I used to enjoy slash until I could no longer stand how heteronormative it all is.

Bah. No wonder I stopped reading fanfic a long time ago, lol.

1. Two words: obvious and sad.

3. I used to enjoy slash until a large portion of disgruntled slash writers in my favorite fandom started using their fics as platforms for misogyny. Idiocy is free, but that doesn't mean I'll read it.

Bah. No wonder I stopped reading fanfic a long time ago, lol.
I still read fanfiction, but I reserve the right to bitch about it, as well. ;)
