I had heard about it prior to reading the book, but had not visited. Once I did, I couldn't figure out how to navigate the site to find what I was looking for other

Welcome to Livejournal! I'm glad to see you here, and I hope you find your LJ niche; it's my favorite of all of the fandomy social networks by wide margins (for me the others ping pong between alluring and untenable, ahaha). Though if you're unfamiliar with LJ's mysterious ways (and they are mysterious) it can definitely be hard to find things. Let me know if you'd like any pointers or suggestions for comms you might enjoy, etc.! Other than that, I'd definitely recommend just friending journals that seem interesting or like-minded--though I think most people are more likely to follow back if like, say you're having a conversation with someone in comments, or someone leaves a comment on your fic--in my experience it works pretty well if you let them know you'd like to friend them because they seem cool/you have X interest in common, etc.--very very often the person will friend back when they have that context. :)

Hi kalliel! Thank you very much for commenting! I'm not sure why the comment was screened though, maybe because I set this journal entry to "friends only?" (I was fiddling with the settings today lol) Anyway, thank you for the tips! I hadn't thought about letting people know I wanted to friend them, I guess I just thought they'd see that I had done so, so I really appreciate that! Looking forward to the Dean H/C meme day and thanks so much for being my "friend!" :))
