The glue-on claw caps -- Softpaws, I think? -- work pretty well for preventing damage to furniture (and people) and teaching cats not to use their claws destructively. The trick is getting them on in the first place...

Yeah, I think Olive would look at me with that "oh, the indignity" look on her face if I tried those.

Mittens gave me that look, and then pointedly sat down and started ripping at them with his teeth. The glue held, but for weeks afterwards he'd come up, glare at me, and make a point of the fact that he was Not Going To Tolerate Them.

That's what I used for Akasha and Scaflock (the other 2 out of 4 cats had been declawed as kittens and this evened out the playing field.)

They work most of the time, and most cats deal with them pretty well. If you can trim their nails, then you can get the nail caps on. They can still catch on loops and such, but it'll prevent most furniture shredding.

Because you will never, ever, stop a cat from the need to run their paws on surfaces and stretch out. If they can be trained to use the scratching post, awesome, but in case that doesn't work you've got options.

I'm impressed.

Wedding - what kind of stuff are you already putting deposits down on?

Paying for the renfest chapel, putting a deposit on a reception stuff (when we find it), buying costume bits so I can sew them ahead of time, and paying for the invitations.

Next step is officiants, caterers, musicians, sound system rental.

Good luck with it all, especially the wedding stuff. I'm finding that apparently I haven't allowed enough time to reserve locations. I hate the idea of pushing it back, but by that point we'll have been together for 5 years so I guess waiting a little longer won't make that big of a difference anyway. But I better go do some more research....

Good luck, good faith, good patience.

And good aim with the squirtgun. The only cats my family successfully trained away from clawing the couch and chairs required real squirtguns and a loud voice, among the many methods.
