Toasties : A Very Dutch Thing

Jan 10, 2014 20:25

As the English are to tea, so are the Dutch to toasties. Toasties are a staple on café menus (though ham 'n' cheese is about as exciting as it gets) and most households have their own well-used toasted sandwich maker. Most, but not ours, so I decided to buy Wingnut one for his birthday. A pretty boring present, even though he's Dutch, right ( Read more... )

Oh wow, you can still get the ones that don't cut them in half? I *only* want one like that because I *mainly* like sandwich toasters for egg sandwiches, and I hate the half the yolk doesn't end up in.

Apparently so. Is it an old-fashioned thing? This was a very new model. I've no idea how common the shell-shaped ones are vs the triangle cutters here though.

Well the one I grew up with was shell-shaped and none of the ones we've found in the UK or Ireland since about 1995 have been. Also the non-divided ones all have removable plates under which cheese and grease get stuck, because they're not really big enough for a generous sandwich. They're meant for grilling really.

These ones definitely don't have removable plates but I'm not sure how generous a sandwich you could make in them. I have a perpetual problem with overhanging crusts, which means you kind of wind up with a double crust.

I feel like I should be providing video evidence at this point. :)

Mild cheddar, peperoni, and a slice of pineapple. The Boy likes it!

This is ham in a generic "vleeswaren" kind of way - the majority of toasties here involve either salami or gekookte gelderse worst. And cheese, lots of lovely goudse, jong, belegen, oud, cheese, cheeeese…

Cheese and mushroom sounds good! I've become stuck in a rut, so think I'll be trying some of these suggestions.

I used to have a George Foreman grill - excellent for pork chops, chicken and fish too!

And I love this song by Rich Hall...

So that's the same George Foreman as the boxer. Learn something new every day. Thank you, Rich Hall and Patrick. :-)
