Eelco said that this blog was about cooking.

?!

And last weekend, Stroopwafel Rob remarked on the lack of politics and feminism.

Okay, so, first thing to hand, a film about "langvoeden" or long-term breastfeeding was released in the Netherlands last month. It's called "TIET ZAT" which is dialect and a pun and horrible to translate but I'll ( Read more... )

I'm strongly of the opinion that breastfeeding is a matter for the mother and child and that anybody else can just fuck right off and mind their own business. I fed K until she was three years old. By that I mean that she was on solid food by then but having the odd breastfeed during the day and before bed. She made the decision to stop when I told her that I had a new baby growing in me... I now know a couple of women who've gone down the expressing route and quite frankly anyone who keeps at it is a goddamn hero.

I'm not without sympathy for those people who don't like seeing women breastfeeding, just as long as they're prepared to realise they've been, well, brainwashed. The actively sexist minority who pipe up are in a different category. But I did have to stop and think about where this is coming from. Hopefully, if we understand the source, it'll be easier to combat.

The fact that people find breastfeeding somehow sexual, or at least the objections they make makes it sound that way, is *so* squicky. Why on earth is a baby on a breast sexual? And the objections from men make me wonder if it's jealousy which is major squicky and positively Freudian.

There's been a lot of brouhaha about this in the US, women getting thrown out of restaurants for breastfeeding without covering the kid with a blanket and such. Other thing they want to ask the women to do is feed the kid in the bathroom, which... wow. Another major Freudian moment.

There do seem to be a few men out there troubled by the fact that the breastfeeding mum's breasts are no longer available to them. Very misplaced sense of ownership there. Not to mention the inability to see breasts as multi-functional, like other body parts.

That bathroom thing… Wonder if their quick is at women excreting anything. Bet those same people also have a poor attitude to menstruation.
