?!
And last weekend, Stroopwafel Rob remarked on the lack of politics and feminism.
Okay, so, first thing to hand, a film about "langvoeden" or long-term breastfeeding was released in the Netherlands last month. It's called "TIET ZAT" which is dialect and a pun and horrible to translate but I'll settle for "There's Time Enough". The film presents facts about breastfeeding and interviews women about their experiences of feeding toddlers and pre-schoolers, in order to show that it's a perfectly normal thing to do. There's
a clip about TIET ZAT in Dutch but an extensive description in English can be found in the drop-down.
As feeding to a year old is the goal in New Zealand, none of this seems strange. However, it was only once a couple of my friends were feeding their 2 and 3 year olds, that I realised that feeding at that age is more common than I thought. If you're not paying too close attention, it looks like the kid is just getting a cuddle.
There is a point to this but this blog being what it is, I feel obliged to provide a bit of context.
The women reflect on the negative reactions to their breastfeeding. Among other things, they are accused of incest. To which I say bullshit. Obviously. But I also think that their accusers don't mean what they say. There's no one who was so deeply concerned for the welfare of these children that they rushed off to the police or social services to report the mothers.
Not that people always report incest, I wouldn't be so naive as to suggest that. But there's a rather large discrepancy between what's said to long-term breastfeeders and what's done.
So I think there must be something else going on. It's my belief that these people are so bothered seeing a woman's breast used for other than a sexual purpose that they feel free to open up their mouths and say something vicious. They really need to get over themselves.
There you go gentlemen, a tiny rantlet. Hope it suits. :-)
