I've only ever once seen a team I support go to a penalty shootout (in .is) and it's about 1000 times worse than watching it on tele and I've seen United in a few shootouts, a team I support equally.
Can't think of a better solution though.

The only solution I can think of is a replay. Playing for pens hasn't afflicted the women's game yet but it's probably only a matter of time. I heard complaints about the men's Copa?

As for the Copa, well Paraguay certainly used the penalties to their advantage, but I can't say they directly played for penalties against Brazil, they just played not to lose. Is there a difference? I feel there is, a slight one. Anyway, I couldn't help but admire them in that game for keeping Brazil out.
Penalties at least have some skilled involved, and I was really shocked at England having to call for volunteers in the women's World Cup, instead of having properly prepared for the eventuality.

The women have a less hectic game schedule but now you mention it I'm sure they have jobs to get back to which would make replays difficult.
Reading about England's penalty planning hurt my jaw, it was truly flabberghasting.
