It's not Doctor Who that has me hiding behind the couch, it's penalties. And as much as I favoured Japan to win the World Cup, there was a point during extra time when I really, really hoped they wouldn't equalise against the USA and cause me to have to scurry behind the living room furniture. But Japan's impressive captain, Homare Sawa, did just that with three minutes to go.
Even then, I thought the US would surely win. Their penalties against Brazil in the quarterfinal went in like clockwork, so who would've thought they'd fall apart like they did? Thus, after a pretty even game, Japan's resilience won out over the USA's speed and power. Congrats, Japan! I look forward to seeing you defend your title in Canada in four years time.
