Chickens!

I've been TALKING about wanting to get chickens for a very long time now. I have never actually managed to do it, because there were just enough complicated bits that I never quite wrapped my head around getting it all done. I mean - just the description of ordering wee baby chicks alone was enough to make my head spin, never mind picked a coop, ( Read more... )

OF COURSE one of them must be named Camilla! The white one, right?

Congrats on finally getting them, and good luck!

Hopefully, yes, the white one, but I'm going to let Hannah pick which one she gets to name, so maybe not. I'm wicked excited for these girls. I am so excited to finally have them!

Oh, they're both gorgeous. So fluffy! The red one-- it's a hen? Big comb, for a hen, is why I ask. How old are they?

You can keep up to 4 in a regular Eglu, right? Well, then you just need two more, so there's an egg for each of you plus one for the pot!

They're both girls, they both are still laying. The rhode-island red mix (with the comb is younger, and lays more. The Orpington is a BIG chicken, so perhaps this Eglu would be comfortable for three. :) It's held three (with this pair included) before. But the model IS rated for four.

Oh good, they're laying now? Cuz she looked kinda butch in that photo. I'm not doing so well with judging scale in pictures of chickens because I didn't realize that was an Orpington. Also I've never seen an Eglu in real life yet.

I miss chickens so much, so I'll be out in my garden today thinking of yours and envying.

Yeah, I thought she looked kind of butch too, but we trust the person we got her from. Also, no crowing, so I think we're good. The Eglu is pretty ingenious although it doesn't look at all like a coop.

It's tough to judge scale in the pictures because there's nothing to compare them with - but the light colored one is HUGE! You can come visit our chickens whenever you want.
