It was near noon and, thanks to his added features, Okita had been dozing lightly in his room while the others were out. When he had nothing else to do he made baskets out of dried grass and checked the speaking box for information. Lately, it had been extremely quiet on that front, so he'd just been making baskets and fans and weaving patches to link together for a box. Normally, he would have preferred training or patrolling, but here he had to be careful. So, on a lovely afternoon, he was lying on his bed with the computer in front of him, head resting on his arms, when someone began shouting outside ( ... )

If there was one word absent from Toph's extensive aristocratic vocabulary, it was "discrete."

"That's me," she greeted cheerfully. "You can just call me Toph. Er...is there a shorter version of your name?" She spoke to his chest, sightless eyes not meeting his as most other people's would.

She took in Okita's stance and the unique vibration of his footsteps, and made a few immediate observations. He was a warrior, fairly light-footed, and probably right-handed judging by the way he favored leading with his right foot. Good company, then. She would be able to recognize him now, even from a distance.

Even if Toph couldn't see him, Okita backed up a step and leaned down a little so he could see into her eyes. They were a little pale, but mostly hidden away behind her bangs. Her lack of sight, however, didn't seem to hinder her - in fact, it probably heightened her other senses. Even in Japan there were rumors of those who had honed their senses to feel the way an opponent moved with their eyes closed. Air vibrations or something like that. Okita had no doubt this girl was having no trouble seeing him, especially if she were a warrior, too.

"Toph-san, then? Good to know, since I'm not the best at foreign languages," he said with a light laugh. It was only since he came here that he had been able to understand this English thing. Sakamoto had always spouted it at him during their fights just to annoy him since the Tosa rebel knew Okita didn't get a lick of it. Oh, how the tables had turned. "And yes, there's both a longer version and a shorter one." Ironic, that. "But you can just call me Soujirou if you wish."

Toph could tell he was leaning down for a look at her face, but didn't say anything about it. People were generally curious after learning she was blind, and as long as people didn't do anything stupid like wave their hand in front of her face, she didn't feel the need to hit them. Her blindness wasn't something that bothered her...usually. Things like not being able to write was a source of embarrassment for her, not to mention things like looks and makeup. But for the most part, Toph was happy with who she was.

"Soujirou it is, then! So tell me Soujirou, you seem to know your way around. Where can a girl get something to eat around here?" She was positively starving.
