What Monique says. Today, millions of people are using revisionist history to make themselves feel good about privileges built on genocide and ongoing oppression.
Because of this, today, when I see thanks without any contextualizing or acknowledgement of the people harmed, it reads as implicit support of that harm. Or by saying "Well that's not what it means to me", I see us holding onto the privilege of ignoring harm while it continues.
If we really are just giving thanks at harvest time for the good things in our lives, and we're not actually glad about the oppressions that give us privileges, could we... I dunno, not ignore that? And not carry on as though today that's perfectly okay?
I dunno. I'll be back tomorrow.
