Small Favor, Deep Thoughts on CoG Re-Release

Apr 06, 2008 12:16

I haven't quite finished Small Favor yet because I just love all the Dresden books so much that I try to read them over a few days rather than devouring them in one sitting. Sure, I can always re-read but it's not the same as the first time through when I don't know how Harry's going to get out in one piece. Thus far, this book has had a few really ( Read more... )

Apophis *had* to be attracted to the host for me to be intrigued by the unspoken competition between Daniel and Apophis; that lent some complexity to the questions in "Secrets" regarding whether we were dealing with Sha're or Ammonet, as well as some depth to "Serpent's Song."

Yes, the physical attractiveness was crucial to both him and his mate, which we saw borne out time and again in the Goa'uld. But I hadn't thought about the second half of your statement until you pointed it out. But yes, absolutely. It added an additional 'ouch' level to things.

Was there anyone else who thought they saw something a little dangerous in the way Ba'al looked at Sam from Reckoning onward?Again, I hadn't really thought of it in those terms, but yes. I think that's why we're seeing much more 'Ba'al for the sexiest Goa'uld' posts. Because there *is* an element of dangerous sensuality about him that wasn't really explored for many of the Goa'uld. We saw it here and there with the females. Nirrti with Jonas (which yes, I was really fascinated by) and ( ... )

Hmm. I think we agree though perhaps with a slightly different focus. I'm first and foremost a hard SF fan- what I look for in a science-fiction series is *idea* content. Some of those ideas are going to be adult-oriented and ought to be treated as such. The disconnect in the way they trivialize Daniel's experience in Hathor compared to the serious treatment of Sha're's victimization in Secrets has always bugged me. Sam's experience in ITLOD is also handled very well. Acts should have consequences. I thought Pretense was great SF- a pure idea show, and I could could have stood a few more of those. As with you and adult content, touching base with those once or twice a season would add more depth ( ... )

Oh yeah, I think we're pretty much in agreement here. Because yes, if you really want to look at the big, wide SF universe out there, I'm pretty sure that adult situations arise and I'd like to see that crop up from time to time. Not all the time, no, but as an occasional consequence of dealing with different cultures and even species ( ... )

I've never understood the habit of the United States about being so freakin' scared of sexuality. Almost every adult has sex. And what's worse is that scene in CotG wasn't about sex in any way, shape or form - it was nudity for the sake of stripping power from the body that was about to become host.

I didn't read the Gateworld article. Does it specifically mention removing or "cleaning up" that scene or is that just speculation?

Yup, that scene is definitely going to be axed.

But the two-part episode is not without its flaws -- most prominently a scene with full frontal nudity. In 1997 the decision was insisted upon by the Showtime network, which planned to air SG-1 at 10 p.m., but vocally opposed by Wright.

"It doesn't belong in Stargate," Wright said. "I'm not a prude, [but] this is a family show. It has violence, there's no question it has violence, but it is almost always some sort of 'just' violence as opposed to random or gratuitous."

The special edition will not simply be a new cut, but a complete reworking of the film from original footage shot in 1997 -- plus some updates to the visual effects. Some scenes will be dropped to tighten it up, making "Children of the Gods" about seven minutes shorter than the version originally aired on Showtime and currently available on DVD.I sort of chafe at bit every time TPTB say 'this is a family show ( ... )

Actually, Brad Wright was there from the beginning. He and Glassner wrote CotG. So I guess in his mind at least, Stargate was always supposed to be a family show.I couldn't remember at the time and later on, I thought that maybe it was Coop that came on after Glassner left ( ... )

I for one am pissed at the whole, sure Stargate has violence and that is okay - but nudity? Nope, gotta go.

I have always had a very hard time why the country is comfortable, ney, thrilled to see violence - it is glorified. But sex? Expressing romance, love, or just straight desire - positive feelings - is something to be hidden, covered, bad, dirty.

Oh, hell yeah! I'm right there with you!

And... I don't even *mind* violence depending on the context, but then to turn around and imply that nudity is inherently an inappropriate thing is just... My brain boggles.

Yes, there was full frontal nudity. Personally, I was just thrilled that Sha're wasn't some emaciated thing, but had a very nice, lush feminine body.

Bah! I'm not sure I'll be lining up to buy something that's LESS than the original. Seven minutes less.

Sucky idea, guys. If they wanted to *add* something meaningful, sure. Taking stuff out? Not so much.
