Small Favor, Deep Thoughts on CoG Re-Release

I haven't quite finished Small Favor yet because I just love all the Dresden books so much that I try to read them over a few days rather than devouring them in one sitting. Sure, I can always re-read but it's not the same as the first time through when I don't know how Harry's going to get out in one piece. Thus far, this book has had a few really ( Read more... )

Apophis *had* to be attracted to the host for me to be intrigued by the unspoken competition between Daniel and Apophis; that lent some complexity to the questions in "Secrets" regarding whether we were dealing with Sha're or Ammonet, as well as some depth to "Serpent's Song."

Yes, the physical attractiveness was crucial to both him and his mate, which we saw borne out time and again in the Goa'uld. But I hadn't thought about the second half of your statement until you pointed it out. But yes, absolutely. It added an additional 'ouch' level to things.

Was there anyone else who thought they saw something a little dangerous in the way Ba'al looked at Sam from Reckoning onward?

Again, I hadn't really thought of it in those terms, but yes. I think that's why we're seeing much more 'Ba'al for the sexiest Goa'uld' posts. Because there *is* an element of dangerous sensuality about him that wasn't really explored for many of the Goa'uld. We saw it here and there with the females. Nirrti with Jonas (which yes, I was really fascinated by) and Hathor with Daniel. (Just... woof! Sorry, but I've always felt that way)

It's not even solely about actual nudity or graphicness - it's about that element of the human psyche. In fact we saw Adria use it on Daniel/Merlin, which was fairly provocative considering who her mother is and her chronological age. zats_clear wrote a couple of comment fics touching on it, but I know it's something that sort of squicks some fans. Which sort of tells me it's good storytelling ;)

Thanks! Fascinating discussion!
