Summary: The rest of the mountain region gets tired of Wyoming failing to confess his feelings to Colorado, so they devise a plan on the yearly cattle drive to get them alone.
A/N: This will probably end up being AU in the grand scheme of my headcanon since I would love for them to be involved earlier in history than recently and this story is set in today's time.

“You’re starting to look like those cattle of yours Wyoming, what with the big eyes you keep making at Colorado.” Wyoming colored visibly under his cowboy hat. It was the annual cattle drive that they usually participated in together. It was for old times sake and they always really enjoyed it. Sometimes they would invite other cattle states but this time it was just a few of them. They were driving the cattle down to Colorado for the National Western Stock Show, the largest rodeo in the United States of America.

“Shut up!” He smacked the larger state on the arm and gave him a stern look. Montana pulled his horse farther away from his younger brother and just laughed at him.

“Hey what’re you idiots doing!? Get back to work, these cows aren’t going to herd themselves.” shouted Colorado from the other side of the herd. She had her hair braided in a long plait down her back under her own wide-brimmed hat. Some of the strands had escaped and hung around her face in a way Wyoming found both wild and beautiful. Wyoming colored more. Montana laughed harder. Moving his horse expertly, Wyoming got close enough to cause Montana’s own mount to startle and off-seat the older state just enough that Wyoming was able to push him out of the saddle. The surprised look on Montana’s face lasted about a second before he started laughing again at his little brother’s antics.

“What the hell?” shouted South Dakota riding up behind them. Montana dusted the grass off his jeans and considered saying something to reveal Wyoming’s infatuation with his southern neighbor, but though better of it when he witnessed Wyoming’s deer-in -the-headlights face.

“Nothing, apparently I just need to lay off of Colorado’s copious amounts of alcohol.” He stated just loud enough for her to hear.

“I do not drink that much!”

“Says the state with the most microbreweries per capita! I hope you brought the beer!” She made a face at him and he grinned.

“Better quit while you’re ahead, bro, otherwise you’re gonna end up with a rattlesnake in your sleeping bag courtesy of the Centennial State.” joked North Dakota from across the herd, a female mirror image of her twin.

“With the look on Wyoming’s face I would wager he’d be getting one from the Equality state as well.” added Nebraska eyeing his younger brother with a knowing look. He flashed a “leave me alone” gaze that he’d been making ever since he was born. Nebraska laughed, Wyoming had always had attitude. In a huff Wyoming rode ahead.

“Leave him alone you guys.”

“Aww, Big Brother Nebraska is going to defend little Wyoming.”

“You know I could take you Montana, I’m older than everyone here, in fact all of you used to be part of my territory.”

“You don’t have to remind us.” the Dakotas said in sync.

“Does she honestly not realize what Wyoming feels about her?” asked South Dakota. The other states looked thoughtful.

“Are you kidding me, I doubt she even notices that he looks at her.” The group sighed collectively. It was always a mess when one state got feelings for another. They needed a plan before it ended up like New Jersey and New York and their love/hate relationship. The mountain west needed a plan to get their two oblivious comrades together and they had most of the trail left to work it out.

A few days later...

“Hey Colorado!” The brunette looked up from the breakfast fire to see light haired Montana strolling out from a grove of Cottonwoods. The others had already gone out to round up the cattle that had wandered in the night. He had a sack lunch in his hand. “Can you take Wyoming his food, he left it this morning.”

“Of course.” She held out a hand and took the bag. She went through the process of saddling her horse and getting ready to go out and find him. “Do you know which way he went?”

“He headed north a bit because he saw the tracks heading into the creek bed.”

“Gotcha, shouldn’t take long.”

“So you say I have my doubts about your tracking skills, you can always catch up with the herd later.” Colorado raised an eyebrow at Montana and muttered something under her breath about her topography being more complicated than his. He just grinned at her. She rolled her eyes and mounted up. She adjusted her hat and headed out into the field.

“Now let’s see what you do when you’ve got her on your own, Wyoming.” Montana grinned and went back to cleaning up camp.

The creek gurgled in a way that made Wyoming think that the water must enjoy its journey over the small pebbles and stones that it traveled over before joining the larger river on its trip to the ocean. He watched as the blades of grass he had plucked from the ground were swept away on the current. Trout swam lazily in the deep pools in the shaded bends of the creek. Wyoming leaned back into the shade of a willow watching the clouds dance through the sky.

This whole situation was not working out so well. He had hoped that after more than 100 years he would be able to say something to her. She had always been there, to the south, there before he had even been born. That’s probably why she did not see him as much. She was older than he was, had more experience, more citizens, more nationally respected resources. His dug his fingers into the ground pulling up more strands of grass. He winced as one of the broad blades cut into his palm. He sat up, cursing his ill luck and went back to his saddle bags for something to wrap it up. It was then he heard horse’s hooves and he looked out across the prairie to see a figure approaching. He itched to grab his gun. Her reminded himself that this was not 1900, outlaws really did not exist in this day and age. As the figure approached it was good that he did not shoot her, it was Colorado, and he felt the butterflies in his stomach as she road up and dismounted, tying her horse to the same branch where he had his own tied.

She smiled at him briefly before her attention was turned to his hand. “Are you hurt?” she asked. Wyoming glanced down at the cut that he had temporarily forgotten about.

“Just a dumb injury. I was just about to take care of it.” Colorado walked up to him quickly, concern in her eyes. She held out a hand silently asking him to show his wound to her. Wyoming obliged. She tended to his hand silently and Wyoming quietly enjoyed the touch of her callused fingers on his. They were both lands born of hard work and it showed in the scars and rough skin of their hands. She was done too quickly in Wyoming’s opinion.

“That should do it.” she said as she tied off the ends of the bandage. “I brought you your food, Montana had said you had left it.” Wyoming’s eyes widened in surprise as he glanced at his equipment. Sure enough, the food he always made sure to carry with him was missing. That jerk, he must have stolen it. Wyoming thought about it for a minute, why would Montana take his food and then send Colorado with it later... oh. He inadvertently blushed, his brother was giving him a chance to be alone with her, something that did not happen very often.
“Thanks.” Wyoming said taking the bag from her. The emotions that had passed over his face were not lost on Colorado. Montana was up to something, she was sure of it. Wyoming sat back down beside the small creek, Colorado was quick to join him. The silence between them stretched to be filled with the sounds of horses breathing and a Western Meadowlark singing its heart out somewhere in the wide expanse of grass.

“What are you doing out here, I don’t see any cattle.” Wyoming blushed. She smiled at him to tell him she was just teasing him.

“I just... like being out here. This is my land you know, wide open skies, the birds, the grasses. It’s peaceful.” Wyoming watched as she took off her hat so that she would be able to stretch out onto the grasses Wyoming was just laying on. She put her hands behind her head and gazed up into the sky.

“I know what you mean. I do that all the time at home. You know,” Colorado tilted her head slightly and looked at him, “Your sky looks like mine. It’s wide open, it’s free, it’s beautiful.” Wyoming tried to fight the urge to blush, to keep his eyes locked on hers. The moment passed and her gaze returned to the clouds up above. Wyoming let out the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding and leaned back into the grass beside her. He mentally berated himself for not saying anything when he had the chance. They lay in silence again, sound of creek, birds and wind their companions. Wyoming silently cursed himself, this was his chance and he needed to take it. He closed his eyes.

“Colorado?”

“Hmm?”

“What... what do you feel about me?” He heard her shift beside him, and then there was silence. He couldn’t bring himself to open his eyes and look at her, he didn’t want to see her look of confusion, part of him wanted to cover his ears so he wouldn’t have to hear her declaration of fondness and friendship. What he got instead was nothing, just the sounds of her moving. He wondered if she would just walk away, with the question unanswered.

-----

Colorado had been caught of guard by the question. It could mean so many things. It could mean about their past, they had had their fair share of disagreements, it could mean about today in this moment. She sat up and looked at his prone form. There were so many things she felt for him that it was taking her time to sort them out in her head. It wasn’t that she had never thought about it. It was just that she had never taken the time to sort it out. All of the emotions rushed at her at once. She examined Wyoming taking him in. His clothes were dusty from being in the field so long. His light brown hair was wind swept and messy. His skin was tan. She knew that if he was to open his eyes to look at her they would be blue. The same color as the sky over the western states, a blue she loved very much.
They had been close ever since he had been born, they were both territories cobbled together from other territories. She had been given statehood long before him, but that was to secure mineral resources in the west, and that enough people had moved there by that time to qualify. She had joined the brotherhood of states. Fourteen years later he had done the same. Very few of the states were true brothers and sisters. They called themselves such for ease of recognition.

She shook her head, her thoughts were going too far astray. Wyoming was quietly awaiting her answer. She was not sure about it, but there was something she wanted to do. She moved as quietly as possible and moved over nearer to him. She decided she would act this time, not just think.

-----

When Wyoming felt her lips gently touch his he jerked up in his surprise, knocking their foreheads together in surprise. It was graceless and he flushed for the millionth time that day. They both apologized, Wyoming for hurting her, Colorado for thinking she had been too forward. It was then that Wyoming decided they spent way too much time doing this and he kissed her back effectively silencing her apologies for misunderstanding their relationship.

The kiss was soft and sweet and Wyoming enjoyed the taste of her. While her northern lands were similar to his, Colorado’s southern landscapes were very different. He could taste the dusty canyons and sandstone cliffs. It was fascinating to him. He wanted to keep kissing her forever as he wrapped his arms around her to keep her near him. If only he could tear down that border to allow her even more closeness to him. He wanted more. He deepened the kiss opening his mouth and drawing his tongue across her lips. She opened her mouth and his exploration of the lands to the south began. Wyoming realized at one point that he needed to pause to breathe. It was in that brief moment of oxygen induced clarity that he realized the others must be waiting for them.

“We should probably head back.” he panted. Colorado smiled at him, the mischievous smile he had seen on her his entire life.

“We aren’t expected until later, Montana didn’t think I would be able to track you down so easily.”

Wyoming internally winced, Montana thought he was being clever all right. He would just have to punch the knowing smirk off his northern neighbors face later. For now he would enjoy finally being able to be with the one he had always wanted.
