Canada could remember the times when he listened to that voice, the little voice inside him that told him to be careful. That little voice that told him he could be lost to America forever. It was still there, whispering quietly in his ear. It warned him of that fact still, even though America had promised he had given up. It was still there, they would dabble in each other's businesses, create transnational companies together. Their leaders would declare their friendship, while they would declare even deeper feelings towards each other. He would hear the warnings of be careful from external voice too. England had always told him to stay away, and Canada knew that he probably had a point.

Yet, he couldn't stop, it wasn't that simple. It was impossible for him to look away, even when he wanted to. He knew, that even though America pretended to ignore him, he was always conscious of his presence as well. How could they not? They were connected by 8,891 km, the longest border in the world. As far as borders went, America only had to split his attention between him and Mexico. North America was a big place, but really only had them.

Beyond the reality there was the emotion behind it all. He and America had been together since the beginning, French colony in the North, English colony in the South. Later they were both under the same flag, although not the same rules. When England would go away they had no one but each other, holding on during the harsh winters, famines, and bouts of disease. They grew up defining each other. America was who he was not. Although he might jest and tease him about it, and vice versa, they loved each other.

When they were alone, Canada could tell the little voice inside him, just as America would quiet his own. They could hold each other in that space where they became Alfred and Matthew, two people tied together, just as much as the nations they represented.
