Back

You’re not alone, together we stand
I’ll be by your side you know I’ll take your hand

Vaan had intended to stay out of it, since it really was none of his business anyway. Warriors of Chaos really didn’t concern him unless they were trying to kill him, he didn’t care whether or not they had problems with each other or how they chose to solve them. In fact, this one had just tried, stating that she needed to destroy him. He had defeated her and she had fled.

He didn’t know what had made him go there, there was just something about the look she had on her face. He couldn’t leave her behind, even if she was the enemy, even if she had asked him not to. He found his feet carrying him back to the wide-eyed girl that had been at the mercy of that evil clown’s spell.

Maybe it was instinct, he didn’t know, it was just that he had this sudden desire to protect her, to make sure that stupid looking clown couldn’t hurt her anymore. There was no way he could not be the hero and rescue the damsel.

“Leave her alone.” he stated, getting in between her and her attacker. He was going to have her back for now.

Take

When it gets cold and it feels like the end
There’s no place to go you know I won’t give in

Terra found herself being overwhelmed. She hated this, she hated having to fight for one side or the other, she disliked this cold, empty world. She hated the monsters she had to face and most of all she hated the monster that lived within her. Cloud had said he could handle it, she didn’t have to be afraid when she was around him. He had saved her from being a monster, for now, and she felt indebted to him for that.

He gave her a small smile once, before he turned his broad shoulders and walked away from her, heading deeper into the enemy territory to seek out their crystals.

That smiled triggered a memory. The image of a boy much younger than Cloud, with a softer eyes and a friendly smile. A young man that had taken her hand and pulled her out of a living nightmare. She could not remember him, perhaps the dreams she had were her own mind. Perhaps he was nothing more than imaginary. He had said he was going to help fight so that she would not have to. Was he real? If he was she wondered what happened to him.

For now she had no choice but to fight on, and hope that this new nightmare would end.

Fight

Keep holding on, ‘cause you know we’ll make it through

It had not been long before the mannequins caught up with them, the world was swarming with them now. Vaan had a sneaking suspicion that it had something to do with that clown.

“Who was that guy anyway, Terra? Why was he making you fight?”

“He, he tells me what to do, I fight because I am a monster. That’s what he says.”

“How can a pretty girl like you be a monster?” he asked, smiling at her.

She looked away, “You just have not seen it, when you do I will probably kill you. Vaan, I can’t stay with you.” She turned to walk away, but he grabbed her hand once again.

“You are going to stay with me until we find you somewhere safe where you do not have to fight anymore. I promised you right? You wouldn’t want to make me break a promise? I won’t let go, I’m going to keep holding on, ‘cause we are going to make it out of here and go home. I’m going to take you to Cosmos.”

“Cosmos? The Goddess of Light?” Her eyes widened at the idea, she was a Warrior of Chaos, how would the Goddess ever accept her?

“Uh-huh, you are going to become one of her warriors, so we can all go home when this battle is over.”

Royalty

Just stay strong, ‘cause you know I’m here for you

“You know what Terra? You’re kind of like a princess!” said Onion Knight after examining her closely. She looked at him wide eyed, as Vaan laughed.

“I agree with him, you are.”

“What makes you say that?” she asked, blushing fiercely, putting her hand to her throat self-consciously, silently hoping the boys would stop looking at her like that. Vaan got the fire ready and came to sit beside her. She drew her knees up, her heart fluttering from the closeness and the smile he was giving her.

“Because you are one of the prettiest girls around here, and you are much more delicate than the ones like Light and Tifa.” he joked, laughing.

“I wouldn’t let them hear you say that, Vaan.” Onion Knight warned. Vaan just laughed it off. He could picture Tifa’s angry face, Lightning would probably just continue to scowl.

“I have to deal with them picking on me anyway.” he said, and turned back to Terra picking up one of her hands and giving a soft kiss to the back of it. “Besides, I’ve got my own princess now, who needs those brawny women.”

She blushed and he smiled as he put an arm around her and pulled her close.

Enemies

There’s nothing you could say, nothing you could do
There’s no other way when it comes to the truth

Terra knew she was her own worst enemy. The knowledge ate at her every moment, every step she took, waiting for the trigger that would set her off. The moment she would become a beast and destroy the ones she cared about. She feared it with every ounce of her being, and yet sometimes she could forget that she was her own worst enemy. He helped her forget and focus on enemies she could defeat, to gain a dream of being at peace at home.

“Vaan, do you think outside of this world, we will ever meet again?” she said as she watched an enemy crumble away into crystalline dust, the victim of one of her spells. She glanced up at him, seeing his eyes narrow thoughtfully as he processed her question.

“I would guess not, since we are all from different worlds, I don’t know how we would meet otherwise.”

She looked away, a lump forming in her throat, “I suppose that’s true.”

“But hey, don’t be sad, we’re together now. We can make it count.” She looked up surprised to see him smiling at her. Before she could respond enemies descended upon them once again. There was no time for them on this battlefield.
