He never knew he could hate certain sounds so much. The sound of sub machine guns, the sounds of incoming canisters of mustard gas, the sounds of men dying horrible deaths in the trenches, these had filled his ears ever since arriving in Europe. He had fought several wars in his time; American Revolution, War of 1812, Spanish-American War, American Civil War, etc. Nothing he had seen before was like this. He knew the sounds and the hatred of Europe would haunt him forever.
When he had arrived he had seen England for the first time in decades. Although their countries were on friendly terms, as individuals they still had a hard time facing each other. His former brother had looked so broken, hunched over a beer, a drink that America had needed to wrest away from him at France's behest. He had listened to England's angry rant for over an hour. He couldn't understand how the countries that were supposedly so civilized could do this to each other. How could they continue to beat each other after they were already broken. He had never heard such honest hatred come out of either of his former mentors’ mouths.
He promised himself that he would stop this war no matter what, so the guns could be silenced and the hatred quelled.
