It was just a shiny metal really, and yet human desire for it was extreme. Finding a vein of gold always started a stir.
It was an unassuming day in 1849, when America's boss came storming into his office and shoved a newspaper in his face. The headline read, "Gold Discovered at Sutter’s Mill". America read the article, floating down the rivers a few prospectors had found flakes of gold.
A smile spread across America's face as he read. He was already making plans for his adventure, to stand shoulder to shoulder with his people for the glory of the country. To be able to discover riches in the wilds, where someone just had to be determined. Determination was certainly one of his qualities.
"Do I get to go?" he asked his boss, giving him the best pleading eyes he could muster. His boss smiled.
"Of course! I want you to go out with he survey crew to verify it and try to figure out just what is out there. We might just have to admit California to the Union at this rate."
America grinned as he gathered up his papers, getting things in order so that he could leave as soon as possible. The California twins would be happy about that. He was about to embark on a grand, history making adventure, this was going to be great!
