I dragged hubby to see Colin's In Bruges over the weekend...erm...not sure what to say, really. I would compare it to Resevoir Dogs, thematically and violence-wise, so if that's not your cuppa then I recommend you step away. Like with SO many movies, I was really really loving this for about a half to two thirds of the way through--there's great ( Read more... )

As much as I love Colin, I saw the trailer for In Bruges online and was pretty doubtful. But if even some of it was worthwhile, I'll give it a shot - Brendan Gleeson is generally a lot of fun to watch, anyway.

All you girls who zoomed in on Nikolaj Coster-Waldau during his tiny stints in Black Hawk Down and KOH, well, I get it now. I really get it.

I haven't seen Colin on the big screen in quite awhile so I was determined to go to this film. Was lovely to see him, and he's really fabulous in it. You'll thoroughly enjoy many parts of it, I expect...it's got a great dark humor and some sweet moments as well. And I totally got where they were going with the end...like Resevoir Dogs it's a sort of morality tale, with some irony thrown in for good measure. So it's not like the ending is totally WRONG or anything. It just put me off when I was initially so involved with the characters. In any case, let me know what you think ( ... )

thanks for the In Bruges info love muffin. I really wanted to see it, but it's only playing in the SUPER expensive "indie" film cinema downtown. I think I'll wait to see it on DVD, even though I'm still excited for it. haha it's a small film so I probably wont have to wait too long.

big kiss!!

Yeah, we had to drive about 25-30 miles to see it. Usually the big 30 screen cinema a couple suburbs over has these arty films, but they didn't have this one. Argh. Movies are arriving on DVD so fast now, so it prolly won't be too long a wait for you! The film's gotten largely positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which lately anything over 40% is a shock to see on there...heh...so I'm sure you'll enjoy it...I just felt like it kinda ran off the rails a bit for me, even though I understood what they were doing. It just has such great charm and empathy and snark in the beginning that I was hoping for a bit more. I look forward to your thoughts when you *do* see it!

hee!! sure thing! I know what you mean, everything is just flying through the cinema to DVD....and bluray. *wink*

I kind of felt the same with The Other Boleyn Girl. I was super excited to see it, but this time it was a BIG letdown. I think I'll write a review of it in a little bit. *smooch*

Oooh, BluRay...sexy! We haven't gotten that advanced yet.

I soooo wanted to see The Other Boleyn Girl and then I started seeing previews and just completely deflated. There just seems to be something...off...about it. And I know I'm going to regret not seeing Eric on the big screen after waiting so long, but I just haven't been able to muster up the desire to see it. I'm sorry it was such a letdown for you...I'd like to know what you thought.

Thanks for the warning about In Bruges. If I'd been taken by surprise in the theater, I'd have been pissed. I don't like when movies are marketed as something they really aren't. Let's Go to Prison did that and pissed me off; it was supposedly a comedy but really wasn't. My best friend who can watch ANYTHING was UNCOMFORTABLE watching it -- and had wanted to see something to cheer her up and *I* recommended that one. :/ I couldn't handle Reservoir Dogs so if I'd seen In Bruges I'd have been upset. I don't know what's up with the arketing people. Maybe movie-makers just need to stick to one genre ( ... )

Ooooh, yeah, I hate those bait and switch movies. I don't understand why there's never any happy medium--either you get a trailer that gives you the entire plot of the film including the end! or you get a trailer that goes "quirky comedy! a laugh riot!" and then you go there and the movie's a gore-fest, or a terrible tragedy, or a talky film with a gut-wrenching plot. Really really hate that. So yeah. The reviews I read kept saying In Bruges was very very dark, and someone compared it to Lucky Number Slevin, so I luckily was prepared for some violent stuff--but still it was rather extreme ( ... )

You know, that's a really good idea about the emails, and as simple as it is to write email, it never even crossed my mind to do so about the shows, which makes me feel kind of like a stupid goober. ;) But now that I think about it, I don't know of anyone who's ever commented that they've written the network about a show they liked. ::thinks hard:: I wonder how the hell they determine what to keep, then. Just based on Nielsens? Can't let some random person be in charge of what I want to watch! I think I'll follow your example and write an email.

Yeah, I think Nielsens is what they base most of their decisions on! Some of the networks finally came to their senses and started accounting for downloaded versions of the shows--I think that came about with the whole Jericho crusade. The station thought no one was watching it, but a large portion of the audience was downloading it from the network's own darn website--duh!

Yeah, the biggest thing about TV is everyone always complains to the network AFTER the show's been taken off, so it's usually too late by then. I figure if we let them know we LIKE something, maybe they'll take it into account with their Nielsen's ratings. Most companies consider a letter written to them to represent a 100 or 1000 or whatever amount other people that feel the same way but didn't take the time to write!

So, here's hoping we can have some sort of influence!

Don't you hate it when filmmakers can't be subtle? A poor ending can completely ruin a film. Despite the obvious great scenery (it's my country, so I'm proud!)

The third Harry Potter book is the best IMHO and it's also the best movie, so I hope you enjoy it! If you've read the books it's totally clear that there's no way they can put all that in a movie. The movie would last ten hours...per book!

Get well soon!

Well, definitely be proud of your country--that little I've seen of it is just gorgeous! And yes...there definitely does seem to be a lack of subtlety. It's funny, because Tarantino in many of his films seems to have a way of going so so far beyond good taste that he circles back on it again. It's like, it's so extreme it's bizarrely funny--or even poetic in some way. But that's a tricky tricky line to play with and he doesn't always get it right, and I don't think it really got right here. Plus maybe it's just that that whole style has been overplayed. Here was something that started out unique and clever and entertaining...and then just hit its audience with a big sledgehammer. Gah ( ... )

Mmmm...Nicolaj... That man is seriously beautiful. It's nice to finally be able to see him every week on my TV screen instead of the odd German or Danish film. *g*

And I was with you on In Bruges. It was great until the last 15 minutes or so. I mean, I thought it was brilliantly black, but it got a little too black towards the end.

Nikolaj is just yum yum yum. Gorgeous, and I just like that sort of laid-back coolness he's got going on, with the little twinkle in his eye. *thud* Here's to hoping we get to keep seeing him weekly!

I'm glad to hear that you agree about the film...I so often feel like I'm just not on the same page as everyone else for some reason. I can see why the film got good reviews because there was a lot of awesome stuff there, and the acting was amazing...but I agree...too dark at the end. It didn't do justice to what the rest of the film had been about, I thought.
