I thought it was a bit brave of them to not do a totally happily ever after ending. And from a character point of view, Will will actually do a better job of keeping to his contract to ferry the dead -- Jack would have gotten bored after a while and ended up be-sea creatured like Davey Jones.
Also, I've heard since seeing it that apparently on the writer's website, in the forum, it's said that if the woman is true, then the curse ends after the first ten years (i.e., that the end scene would be Will coming back for good). Don't know if mention of that got cut in the film, or where they'd get someone new to ferry the dead then...
(p.s. I have all the Cap'n Jack you could want, here. Heh!)
I would've like a fairytale ending but it didn't have to be perfectly happy--I just protest *this* ending in particular, you know? I don't like what it did to the character of Liz.
You are right that Will is a more steady person and would do the job properly. I just thought somehow his father was going to get him out of it or something. It just didn't sit well with me.
Yeah, some peeps have mentioned what the writer said and it seems a bit odd to leave out that CRUCIAL bit of info. Unless he's just making that up seeing as people have been unhappy about it.
P.S. I just peeked at your OT5...LOLOL!! That is perfect...hee! "Just takin' advantage of a good thing, as it were." Whee!
There were other things they did with Liz I thought were worse. At least in this movie, the passing on of the captaincy and winning Pirate King were awesome.
But, yeah, this post-movie news sounds like revisionism. Wonder if they'll tweak the story for DVD? Or put it in POTC4?
Well, they at least made stabs at feminist strides, though of course the films are largely about men. Granted, that's historically accurate so I don't quibble too much there. But it just seems as if this one was really shaping up to be pretty good to Lizzie, and then they just skewered it.
I would've been okay, I think, with a slightly ambiguous ending. I just didn't like *this* particular ending and it made it actually tragic, on a couple of levels, which is not what we signed on for. But I'm usually in the minority on this, at least on LJ. I know people like dark endings. I've just always felt that life it unhappy. The reason I go to see a fantasy pirate movie is to live a fantasy and be happy for a couple of hours, you know?
Yes, I understand :) They could have left the story with Will leaving the beach, and cut the "ten years after" part. That way we could have imagined what we wanted: she stays and lives an exciting life on her own as a pirate (with plenty lovers), she stays and lives an exciting life (being right on Will), she finds a way to go with him, and so on.
Note: I didn't see the cookies, so I'm inferring stuff from your post.
I didn't understand why she couldn't just go with him. I mean, she'd lose her soul, maybe, although he has the power to give souls back now I guess. And it's not like she's some useless girl who can't be a pirate. She's already a pirate, so just be a damn pirate with your damn husband and your damn pirate-in-training. Like, what kind of jobs are available to her anyway? She's married to an undead pirate for god's sake, she can't just go back to being a lady.
LOL...yes, I'm Lady William Turner. Oh, Mr. Turner? Undead pirate, ferrying souls to the other side. Would you like some tea?
I thought when they got the little boat ready for her, it was so she could go over and join him. I thought it a bit odd that they left her on that shore for her one day and then she did...what exactly??? It drives me batty.
And you're right, Will is in charge, so he could always release her from her debt. But I guess maybe she'd have to die first to be a member of the crew? I dunno, the whole thing is convoluted and it just really upset me. After all we've been through and they end up apart but tragically linked? Gah.
I'm glad it's not just me! It hurts all the more because I was loving it soooo much up until the end. I just kept waiting for them to fix it and....nope. So now MY heart is broken. Not exactly what I'd had in mind for the end of the trilogy.
I think it would make sense what one of the posters said above about after ten years the curse being lifted because we do get a clue to it. I was wondering why Davey Jones was so pissed off that Calypso didn't show up after the first 10 years, enough to betray her...after all, she's a goddess and he's immortal, not like they wouldn't have plenty of chances to be together, and he had to know she was rather...ah, unreliable. His wrath, in retrospect, would have made a hell of a lot more sense, though, if her being faithful would have released him, though, wouldn't it?
I have to say that I think it would have been a worse ending had Jack ended up the one ferrying the souls...and now that I think of it, that might have been another clue to that ten-year thing. Jack would never have been released. Of course, it's all supposition. I wish I would have stayed all the way to very end, but the Sea Monkey decided to get /extremely/ active during the maelstrom scene, and so I needed to get up and find a bathroom before my bladder exploded.
Well, I was told by thalassatx that the part about the curse being lifted after ten years was cut from the film. I'm not sure why they would cut it unless they *wanted* us to think it was this dismal end. You're right, the betrayal would've seen even worse if the ten year rule were in effect, so again, not sure why they cut it
