This ship was originally intended to be a luxury cruiser for civilian usage, but it has since become trapped in some kind of temporal anomaly, from which neither it nor we can escape. So in that sense it's a prison.

Oh, listen to that, you sound just like the Spaceman. So if it's a temporal anomaly, that means that it's traveling in time over and over again or something like that, doesn't it?
