The GOP also benefits because Gustav has taken the media's attention off Palin's new child/grandchild issue, giving the spinmeisters more time to figure out a good way to present this little bit of scandal. (For those not following the blogosphere, there's some evidence that the infant child of Governor Palin is actually the child of her highschool-aged daughter, who was pulled out of school for "Mono" for a few months. And Sarah herself didn't exactly look pregnant at the 6 month mark.)
