The first chapter of Ghost Story is available on Penguin Books' website!

WHO WANTS TO TALK ABOUT IT?

(Obviously spoilers through "Changes" abound. Also, Jim Butcher's website has the schedule for the release of the rest of the chapters leading up to the book coming out in July, although Chapter 2 won't be out until JUNE. *wibbles*)

Spoilers for Ghost Story chapter 1 )

I don't know about your questions, but that was TOTALLY Murphy's dad.

OHHHHH. I think you're right! :D I was trying to figure out if we'd seen him in the series before, but oh, yes, I think you've nailed it.

Butcher very carefully didn't tell us his surname, and I can't remember if we ever got told Murphy's dad's name, but doesn't "Jack Murphy" sound perfect? *grin* Harry's not the only dead guy with a daughter - that line told me that the guy's daughter would be someone important, and how many of Harry's friends have dead cops for dads, especially ones who would wind up in the Chicago Special Investigations office post mortem? I seem to remember that Murphy essentially took over her dad's job.

Mouse will be able to see Harry, I agree, and Bob _would_ be able to, but for some convenient plot-devicey reason, will not be in a position to do so. Sanya, maybe? Michael? The priest-whose-name-escapes-me (Forthill?)? They'd probably be able to tell he was around in a generic "whoah, something's around" kind of way. Likewise Thomas. Lea?

Yeah, now that you've pointed it out, it fits too perfectly to be anything else - even the mention of the daughter. :D And, yeah, I can't imagine anything more appropriate for Murphy's dad to be doing in the afterlife ( ... )

EEEEE! That's great! Thank you for sharing it with us.

You're right, I need more, I can not believe it's going to be June before we get more!

You noticed when he was going through the people in his life who might be in peril, he didn't think about Thomas?

Need more now!

I did notice that, actually! (Why, no, I'm not obsessed. Not even a little bit. *g*) But possibly that was because he trusts Thomas to be able to take care of himself, while he feels more responsible and protective towards people like Molly and Murphy.

Okay, yes, I can accept that, except Thomas hasn't been a great place since Turn Coat. Mostly I just miss him and want him back.

I'm very intrigued to see JBs take on the afterlife and how Harry will be able to view his world now. It's going to be interesting to see if Harry gets to see who is picking up the slack in his absence. I absolutely loved the story in Side Jobs, and it makes so many changes in Dresden's world.

I know; I want Thomas back, too. And I'm DYING to see his reaction to Harry's death (if we do see it - though we ought to see aftermath of it, at least).

Ditto to the story in Side Jobs, too. :D I really love how Harry's world has expanded through the various books, and Butcher obviously puts a lot of thought into what the characters get up to when Harry isn't around. AUGH now I want more book and there ISN'T ANY MORE. *flails*

Mouse and Mister will definitely know when he is around. Bob, of course. My brain is kinda foggy from all the allergy meds right now, but didn't he work with a real medium once? Murphy, Michael, the apprentice whose name is escaping me at the moment (darned drugs) - I bet they will all get vibes of some sort. I wonder if Thomas will? Or anybeing from the Nevernever?

Who had him killed? I think it was someone from or working with the anti-White Court. I can't imagine the remaining 10 books being written with him as a ghost, so he must be getting a body again. Will he still have to fulfill his promise to be a Knight?

Oh yeah, the medium - we haven't seen him in a while, but I don't remember him getting killed or anything. Ha. It would TOTALLY be the kind of luck Harry has if he has to seek out the medium to help him, since he can't really stand the guy. :D

I don't think most of Harry's friends (Thomas, Michael, etc) are sensitive enough to the supernatural to be aware of him. But Mouse for sure (and Mister, you're right) - and I can't see why Bob wouldn't be able to see and speak to him, which means there's got to be some kind of plot reason why Bob can't. That would make Harry's life too easy. :D

Definitely can't do anything that would make Harry's life easy. It would be way too suspicious.

The reason I think Michael might be open to sensing Harry is because of his connection to the sword and his deep religious beliefs. If Harry's hanging around angels...

Oh, very interesting. I honestly thought Butcher was going to pull a Supernatural and start off with someone or something putting Harry back in his body. After reading this chapter, I find myself quite happy that that wasn't the case. I cannot wait for this. Come ooon July!

I know! It's so much more interesting to have him be a ghost, although I wonder how in the world Butcher is planning to get him out of this, because there are still a ton of books to go; he can't be dead for the rest of the series. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. JULY! I WANT!

KYAAAA! *bounces off to go read IMMEDIATELY!*

Okay, back now...MEEEP, can we have the REST of the book NOW PLZKTHNKS!

Speculating...speculating...yeah, I'd be surprised if Mouse can't see him...but beyond that? I reeeally don't know. He hangs around with a lot of powerful people, but I can't think of any mediums off hand...I'm guessing the Sidhe could probably see him but then they're all only partly allies.

Also, when he gets back, how much time has gone by?! I mean, time is often funny in purgatory and all the other books have been set roughly a year apart...is that gonna be true for this one as well? HOMG, I want to see how everyone's coping SO BADLY! (Why YES, thought dead is one of by biggest kinks EVER! ^_-)

Wants the next book precious, NEEEEDS it!!

I *think* Butcher said in an interview or something that there's not going to be the usual year-long gap between books (in story time, I mean). I might be thinking of "Aftermath", though. I think I could see it going either way ... if there *is* a long time-gap, we'd miss out on a lot of reactions, but on the other hand, they would have had time for it to sink in and the long-term grief would probably be pretty good too. Like you, "presumed dead" is one of my big kinks; I really want to see Harry's loved ones reacting to his death!

As far as mediums go, there was that one con-artist guy who talks to ghosts way back in some of the early books. I could see Harry going to him - it seems like the way that Harry's life tends to go, because, well, Harry can't stand him, so having to rely on him to communicate with the living would be exactly the kind of thing that DOES happen to Harry. :D Augh, I want the next book NOW!
