Annoyance

Jan 31, 2007 14:34

Being a Christian myself (although admittedly one who is so far from perfect it's really disappointing), I find myself continually perturbed when I see people who make it their life's effort to research, philosophize, and otherwise re-interperet the Bible to suit their own whims and live their lives in a way which pleases themselves rather than God ( Read more... )

I guess it all goes with whether or not you hold the belief that the Bible's message is God's infallible word.

Which is a belief that came AFTER the life of Christ and the formation of the Christian church. Even the bible itself says that Christ is God's Word (not a book). So some of us are truly seeking truth and trying to build our lives on God's Word instead of seeking dogma and trying to build our lives entirely on the writings of the spiritual seekers who came before us. The bible can be invaluable without being infallible. In fact, it has been treated as such by Christians throughout history ( ... )

Actually, on a second reading of this post here, I'm inclined to agree. I can't stand how the pro-forced-pregnancy/anti-choice harassers outside the abortion clinic where I volunteer make it their life's effort to research, philosophize, and otherwise re-interperet the Bible to suit their own whims and live their lives in a way which pleases themselves rather than God and furthermore spend even more time in self-justification. And I'm perturbed by those who use my faith to justify war, too. You're right. There has to be a boundary between what is truth and what we want to be truth. Jesus said the litmus test for all Truth (the command on which all the law and the prophets hang) is Love - of God and neighbor ( ... )

Hi, I just stumbled across this post and was drawn in by the reference to 'what is truth?' as its a question I'm looking at. I work for a Christian organisation here in UK and so am brought into contact with a number of very different people, both Christian and non-Christian, most of whom believe they have the monopoly on 'the truth'. I guess I have always found that a challenge to my own search for truth and happen to be going through a period of introspection right now.

Anyway, I've added you as a friend so that I can keep an eye on further thoughts that may crop up in your journal - feel free to add me - although I haven't written about anything along these lines as yet - simply a collection of random ramblings thus far!

This is how I understand it. I think I know what you mean and understand your annoyance at how people interpret Bible. To me, the verse in the topic is the answer. and if you have read my posts you probably understand how I understand God.
