GoS Spoilers, kinda.archie_tectDecember 19 2011, 06:33:38 UTC
Spoilers a-comin' in a very vague kinda way:
A few months after the end of A Game of Shadows, Holmes asks Watson (and Mary, if you like,) to a concert. It's only once they're on the steps of the concert hall that Watson sees the posters advertising the performance of some of Schubert's works, including Die Forelle.
Que Holmes, who is determined to overcome the vividly terrifying memory of being strung up from the rafters by a meat hook (and probably just that whole, terrible affair in general,) and Watson, who knows what all this is about but is too stalwart to do anything but sit down, shut up, and let Holmes squeeze the living daylights out of his hand.

Oh, please do! If you do end up filling this I might have to marry you. Or at least propose, or something. Or maybe just some nice flowers. I'm not really good with commitment.

Okay, this idea is already taking over my brain... I may have this started before I even see the movie, haha.
Question: does Watson actually know what the song is in the movie? I mean, if he doesn't know German and isn't familiar with the song, he could go into that concert with no idea what's coming until the first notes are played (which isn't exactly what you prompted, but the thought occurred to me). Just wondering. ;)

Mwa ha ha ha ha! Yes, yes, that's grand. My idea serum is working right on course.
Well, Watson hears the song well enough while the scene is playing in the movie, so I suppose whether he recognizes it at the time as Schubert or not is up to you. If he does, then he would obviously have some warning before they took their seats what the evening was going to be like (al a just enough time to get anxious about this,) but if he doesn't, then poor Watson is in for a shock once the music kicks up. I can see either possibility as being justifiable, so it's really up to you!

Splendid! That's what I figured (about him hearing it clearly but without anything said about whether he knew the song itself), but I didn't want to assume too much. :)

This is so lovely! I adore your Mary, she rings very true to me. And poor Holmes, not realizing that Watson could hear him screaming...that must have come as an unpleasant shock to learn that new bit of information about an already horrifying memory.

Thank you! I rather love movie!Mary. :) And you're certainly right about it being an unpleasant shock--of course, the assumption that Holmes didn't know about the sounds being broadcast comes from my own head, but it seemed reasonable considering that Holmes was rather distracted at the time. ;)

Yeah, poor Holmes had a few other things on his mind. In some ways that's almost be a mercy, because he strikes me as the type who would be more upset about not being able to stop himself screaming than about the pain itself. Holmes as I read him hates displaying weakness, and seems the type to self-flagellate over his perfectly understandable human reaction.
