Summary: AU. Comedy. The start of something awesome.
The setting of this AU story series is around 1500AD Japan. In this existence, some people are Empowered while most others are Powerless. (It's common enough that being Empowered does not automatically make a person seem freakish.) Powers tend to be very specific and only work a certain way, but they can be anything from the ability to hold your breath really long to the ability to turn into a bear to the ability to locate anybody in the country with just their name. Really, anything. Since 1500-ish Japan is full of a bunch of warlords waging little mini-wars on each others willy-nilly, the Powers that can be used in battle tend to be highly sought-after.
Instead of sports teams, the characters are collected into other sorts of time period-appropriate groups such as armies, and have all been tweaked so as to fit properly into this setting without being too anachronistic. Detailed descriptions of the changes made to each character can be found here. Third-year characters are adults at "the present time" in this universe, second-years between the ages of about 16-19, and first-years from around 14-16. There currently is no fic set at "the present time," but it's probably about when Echizen turns up in Seishun much like Prince of Tennis proper.
The Shitenhouji Story is designed like a series of omake comics that would go at the end of large installments of some other story. Each chapter is unitary, each has a different narrator, and a lot of time passes between each one without much indication of what happened in the meantime. Little to no time is spent defining the setting, so it doesn't quite make sense on its own.
