Tales of Vesperia is a fun as fuck game and it had a shit ton of things you could go around doing.
Unfortunately when people think of WRPG they think of, ostensibly, Oblivion (or Fallout if they prefer sci-fi since they're really the exact same fucking game with different settings). And that's not necessarily bad- Bethesda makes good games- but there's not really many "iconic" WRPG franchises, because over here, RPG gamers are a niche, whereas shooter fans are the majority, and what shooter fans want is more Call of Duty, and more Halo.
I would go as far as saying each RPG is a different experience, even Final Fantasy although I am known for my distaste for FFX. If there is one thing Yahtzee is quite right about, it's that Square clearly wants to tell stories, not make games around them. They are a gaming company so you will pay money for cutscene-heavy games to explain all the story shit they would prefer to tell you in a straight up movie. and this is nothing new: Xenosaga has been remade three times in progressively more

Basically my point is Different audiences = Different products. Theyhave some weird ass fucking tastes in games over in Japan, compared to people in America who have relatively tame expectations. So the games in any genre are going to be off the wall fucking WEIRD in Grorious Nippon, while our games are going to be pretty predictable stuff that sells (because money comes first in the US).
man idk what you're talking about, ain't nothing weird about a loli demon that can shoot a laser shaped like a heart and nuke an entire battle arena

Also here's something interesting; Japanese cenorship laws seem to go out of their way to avoid outright banning pedophilic content and loli.
