First, it was unequal. Miaka kept getting herself into trouble and Tamahome kept rescuing her. Honestly, the girl should be standing on her own two feet, Tamahome!
All their romance involved was splitting up, coming back together again, splitting up and coming back together again.

If you say "a" rival, as in only one, I don't think you watched FuYu. The whole thing was nothing but rivals. :P

Oh yes, there are other rivals. Hotohori's love for Miaka, for instance. I think that he just should have gone with Nuriko because the romance there would have been far more in depth.

Sora/Kairi is not a "cliche" romance, it is a nonexistant romance. They never actually form a relationship with each other beyond being friends. In fact, nobody in the Kingdom Hearts series can be considered a "couple" except for Mickey/Minne and Donald/Daisy.

I always thought that Axel/Roxas was a lovely bit of canon. Not as dramatic as Me/Kurama, but Axel's dedication was heart-touching, and his death was deliciously angsty.
