First, it was unequal. Miaka kept getting herself into trouble and Tamahome kept rescuing her. Honestly, the girl should be standing on her own two feet, Tamahome!
All their romance involved was splitting up, coming back together again, splitting up and coming back together again.
There was also a rival for their romance - Yui. Lots of cliché romances like Sora/Kairi and Squall/Rinoa have this.

Honestly, Miaka should have gone with somebody like Yui instead. It would have been far more interesting, especially with the way that Yui treated Miaka and the fact that Miaka never completely gave up on her as a friend.
