Why Play Mixed Games?

Oct 10, 2006 19:07

Some suggested that it isn't a good idea to play in mixed games, arguing that Mixed games are to give each player a chance to play a game (s)he is good at. I want to play a game I am good and and not games other people are good at. Thereby increasing my EV. I think this argument is ultimately flawed ( Read more... )

"or do you want to be an above average Stud/8 player against eight opponents who each make two mistakes every other hand?"

This is exactly why I became a fan of Omaha. I think most of the people I play with have more or less caught up with me but I still love the game.

I also am a big fan of mixed games - but hate mixing NL and Limit games. Sure, the variance for the levels may be the same over time but it is a very difficult mental shift within a single session.

Finally... get me back on the list!

"Meanwhile, the last few weeks I've been hitting that sweet O/8 game on Monday nights here in NYC - better EV than any NL HE game I could find in the same geographical area."

I'm going to need a bit of these winnings amigo. I hear the Wed night game is good as well.

After playing the Monday one at 5/10, I realized I need more O/8 practice at the 5/10 level before I try that 15/30 Wednesday one. I make too many mistakes with one-way hands on the turn at the moment to beat a 15/30 game, I think. I'd like to play in the Monday 5/10 one more regularly, but I am so darn busy at work during the week.

This will be cryptic to many -- but the Monday O8 game (and similar games at this location) are MUCH BETTER games (much worse players) than the game on Wednesday that didn't even get off today.

I played a NL mixed game that was a bit crazy a while back. Dealers choice, NLHE, NLO, NLP and NLCP. The NL Omaha is nucking futs. This was more of a crap shoot that a real mixed game, but we're getting there.

Did you receive your table and if so how is it?

There is a section in the Ciaffone/Rueben book about how NL Omaha didn't really make sense and soon after its introduction it reverted to PL. The problem is that there are so many close gambles preflop (in particular) and sometimes on the flop that it's better to not allow overbetting of the pot. I've never understood why Pokerstars runs NLO/8 instead of PLO/8.

I scheduled the table delivery Thursday because I have to stay home from work (curbside drop-off only). I will post pictures Thursday or Friday night.

Some players only care about "money EV" instead of "skill EV". They aren't willing to sacrifice the former to improve the latter.

Hell of a post, dude. Well done!

What do you think the next big game will be O/8? HORSE? Those are the top two on my list.
