drink, or don't drink, to your health!

This is actually a reply I posted in my friend Becky's journal. (I was gonna link to it, but it's locked). She was talking about being on a health kick, and how the changes were really starting to work. By the time I finished typing this reply, I figured I may as well share it with everyone and see what their thoughts on the subject were. I focused ( Read more... )

Yay! Good for you!

As for the soda deal, I agree with you. When I was growing up my mom NEVER allowed me to drink soda, which is why I don't really like it that much, even now. Like you said, it's full of sugar and calories and crap that you really don't need, and it really surprises me when I see moms or dads with their children and they're giving them Pepsi or something to drink, when it's so unhealthy for them. Plus it gets them used to the taste of it at an early age, which obviously sets them up to drink more as they grow up. = /

Very good point. I hafta wince sometimes, too, when I see toddlers gulping down pops. The earlier you start, the more engrained it becomes. And then it's just that much harder to quit when you're older. Parents need to show better judgment in what they expose their kids to. Like for me, I only remember drinking juice, milk, and stuff like that when I was super-young. I don't think I started on pop until I was at least ten years old.

These days, I drink soda moreso for the caffiene than anything else. I really need to cut back on the stuff as I'm getting more on the pudgy side as well. Perhaps its also due to sugary sodas...

I feel you on the caffeine thing. But in terms of that, I just get my fix from coffee or tea. Like those UCC Coffees, I buy them by the case. They have maybe half as many calories as a can of pop, and all the daily allowances of stuff in them are single digit percentages (including the sugar). Although it sucks for most people, who don't have access to Mitsuwa or something similar.

Buying the American equivalent of those drinks, like Starbucks in bottles/cans, costs a lot more money. That and those are loaded with more fat, calories, and etc. Better to just make it yourself at home, when you can. As for at work, I dunno. Move out to Chicago, then you can buy can coffee at Mitsuwa :P That or, try and nab some at the New Jersey store, which isn't too far right?

I'm totally with ya on the water thing. I don't know how or why I did it, but I hardly ever drink soda anymore either. I remember being a kid going out to dinner with my parents, and i'd almost always get a soda to drink. I think perhaps as I got older, I didn't want to spend the extra $2 on a drink, plus it started getting too sweet for me ( ... )

I totally agree with what you said above. That's always my philosophy, too. After eating a greasy meal, full of calories, why throw more fuel onto the fire? At least with the food, the calories are more worthwhile... because they nourish and/or fill you up. But the pop is just empty calories, purely for taste. And definitely a waste a money, yikes. At most fast food places, for the cost of a drink, I could just get another sandwich instead ( ... )

Dude, I completely feel ya on the water. I stopped a few years ago too, but I will occasionally have a relapse with Diet Coke, but in general, that does make me feel sluggish. The sugar in there really puts the weight on. Since I stopped drinking pop, my weight has more or less stabilized, and with the help of water and working out, seen a big change in the general fitness of my body.

Honestly I pour so much water down my throat now, its not funny. I go through at least 3 liters of it at work, another liter on my way home from work, at least 1.5 liters at the gym, and then a ridiculous amount during the night.

As far as alcohol goes, well... not as disciplined there. I have been going out a lot more with people from around my area, so that makes it easier to drink without the threat of driving such long distances. I rarely drink until shit faced anymore, as I have learned to stay away from the poison of Vodka.

That's a lot of water! Although with the addition of working out and stuff, your body can definitely use some extra. You prolly have clear pee almost all the time. Which is good, of course. People don't realize how bad it is to have dark yellow pee, that's usually a sign of bad dehydration.

SHLORP! Although funny enough, the friend of mine named Becky actually HATES the idol girl Becky that we're thinking of. She calls her "stupid halfie" and stuff, and talks about how she's a disgrace to the name ^_^
