Part 2 - Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)

October 4th
            St. Matthews Hospital
            It was official.
The male pregnancy operation had been given the green light for limited usage for those who want it. Once they heard about it, Tony and Paul, the latter having returned from India with lots of footage and a few wild stories, began to make an appointment for preliminary scans and were at the hospital, awaiting confirmation of eligibility to have the operation.
The two men sat in the doctor’s office, anxiously awaiting the doctor they met - Dr. Addy - to return with the news. While awaiting the appointment, they had decided for Tony to be the one to have the baby since he was the younger of the two.
The joy soon changed to fear and devastation for Tony when Dr. Addy returned with the news: due to Tony’s past bi-polar disorder, there were fears of if being passed onto the baby. Plus, with his past demons, there was also fears of what he had done in the past would be too much of an after-effect on the pregnancy. To sum it up, Tony wasn’t fit to be the ‘mother’.
Tony almost broke down right there, fearing their dreams were shattered before they could even get off the ground.
That was when he heard the three words that nearly stopped his heart once more.
            “I’ll have it.”
Tony looked up and turned to face his partner, who had spoken those words.
“If Tony can’t have it, then I’ll go through with it.” Paul stated, seriously and sternly, his blue eyes hard as diamonds.
“W-what?” Tony whispered in shock, not believing what he heard.
“Mr. Merton, you know this is a huge risk due to-.” Dr. Addy began, the young male doctor rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
“I know there are risks and I know I’m older, but…,” Paul paused, his eyes softening. “We really want this, Zach.” Paul went on. Dr. Addy froze with a troubled frown. Paul had known Dr. Addy for several years due to him being old friends with Sarah, Paul’s past wife. During that time, Paul would only call Zach by his first name when he was really serious or really afraid. The fact that Paul called him by his first name at that moment meant that Paul was, indeed, very serious about this operation.
“Paul, you can’t do this!” Tony suddenly cried out, grabbing Paul’s arm with fear in his almond brown eyes. Paul looked down at Tony, staring deep into his lover’s eyes.
“Zach…” Paul began, still not taking his eyes off of Tony.
“I’ll leave you two alone to talk this over.” Zach nodded, quickly exiting the room. Once Dr. Addy left, Paul gently removed Tony’s hands from his arm.
“Tony, this is the only way, you know that.” Paul began, holding Tony’s hands in his.
“Paul, I don’t think this is such a good idea. Having you do this instead of me, it’s very risky.” Tony worried.
“Tony, I want to do this. Remember, it’s not just you who wants a baby. It’s what we both want.” Paul told him.
“But, you’re-!” Tony began to protest, but Paul held up a hand to silence him.
“Yes, I know, I’m 50 years old, but I’m the only one healthy enough to do this.” Paul cut him off. Tony nodded with a frown, looking down. Paul sighed, having a feeling Tony still wasn’t sure about this. Reaching over, he placed his hand under Tony’s chin and lifted his head slowly up so the greying man could see him.
“I’ll be fine, you silly fool. If I can handle travelling around China and India, I can handle this.” Paul smiled slightly.
“Y-you promise?” Tony whispered, almost child-like.
“Tony, we don’t-,” Paul began to say, but stopped, still noting the fear and concern in Tony’s eyes. “I promise I’ll be as careful as I can, darling.” Paul promised, holding Tony’s hands in his own and planting a small, gentle kiss on Tony’s knuckles.
When Dr. Addy returned, the two men asked for Paul to have the operation. After a few preliminary scans, Paul was given the ok to go through with it, much to the relief of the two men.
Two days later, Paul was wheeled into the operating room to have the same operation Ryan and Colin had almost a year before. The only difference was it would not be against anyone’s will, nor would it be advanced in anyway. In the span of several hours, the artificial womb was inserted into Paul, with eggs from an anonymous donor that were fertilized by Tony and Paul’s sperm.
Paul was very groggy when he awoke hours later from the anaesthesia in the recovery room on the hospital.  His feelings changed, however, when he saw Tony and Dr. Addy waiting for him to awaken. Dr. Addy told him that the operation went alright, but they had to wait and see if it was a success and if Paul was going to have a baby.

Two weeks later…
            The London Studios
Paul groaned, burying his face in his hands as he sat in the dressing room area. Ever since the operation, he started having the first onset of the pregnancy signs. Already he was having headaches and small bouts of nausea, but Paul wasn’t absolutely sure if it was side effects of the operation, the pregnancy, or if it was a sick combination of both.
“Damn it, if I’m feeling like this beforehand, how am I gonna be in seven or eight months?” Paul muttered, massaging his temples with his fingertips.
            “Paul?”
Paul jumped slightly before quickly spinning around to face the owner of the voice: Ian Hislop. Paul sighed in relief, relaxing when he saw his friend.
“Don’t scare me like that. What’re you tryin’ to do, give me a heart attack?” Paul stated, running his hands over his face.
“Are you alright?” Ian asked, worried.
“Hm? Yeah, yeah, I’m fine, why ask?” Paul replied, a bit distracted, then asked, tilting his head slightly.
“It’s just that you look a bit pale… well, more than usual. Plus, you look like you’re about to pass out any minute.” Ian replied.
“I’m a little under the weather, nothing to worry about, Ian.” Paul replied as he stretched his back, arms flexing over his head. While doing so, the bottom of shirt began to ride up, revealing the healing scar from the operation two weeks before. This did not go unnoticed by Ian, who saw the scar.
“What’s that?” Ian questioned. Paul froze in mid-stretch, looking up at his friend.
“What’s what?” Paul asked back, looking shifty-eyed.
            “That scar.”
“W-what scar?” Paul was growing wary. Ian had seen the first visible sign of the surgery before he even had a chance to figure out if it was a total success. That was when Ian reached over and lifted Paul’s shirt up. “Ian, you know if anyone sees you doing this, they’d think-.” Paul began, trying to be jokingly, but it was failing hard with what Ian discovered.
“That scar! Where’s it from?” Ian asked, pointing to the surgical scar under Paul’s naval. Paul jerked away from Ian, pulling his shirt back down.
“It’s nothing, Ian, just an old injury.” Paul stated, tucking in his shirt and not wanting to tell Ian the truth.
“Paul, that scar looked like the same I had two weeks after my appendectomy. That isn’t an old scar, that scar was made recently.” Ian stated. Paul looked away from his friend, silent and frowning. “Paul… Paul, was it Tony?” Ian asked worriedly. Paul stood up in anger and turned to face the shorter man.
“Ian, how could you ever think that?! Tony did NOT hurt me!” Paul snapped, rage in his eyes. He turned away in a huff and walked away angrily from his friend.
“Then why do you have that scar, then!?” Ian snapped back at Paul, equally angry. Paul stopped walking, realizing he had no other choice. Either lie to his friend or tell him the truth. He sighed, going with the latter.
“It’s…,” Paul hesitated, looking down at himself, hands clenched in fists. How can he tell Ian the truth, about the operation and the reasons why he did this? He took a deep breath and turned to face Ian, who stared at him with his arms crossed and a stern look on his face, almost resembling a university professor.
“It’s that… I had that male womb operation a few weeks ago.” Paul went on, softly and blushing slightly. Ian was flabbergasted. Did he hear correctly?
“Wh... what? You had a what?!” Ian asked, trying to comprehend what he just heard. Paul took a deep breath, putting his hand on his stomach.
“It’s like artificial insemination, but they add an artificial womb if you don’t have one.” Paul explained, looking down at his feet.
“Are... are you serious?” Ian asked, still in disbelief.
“It’s already been tested… and… two of my old mates have gone through with this.” Paul answered, not daring to look at the shorter man.
“Two of your friends? Who?” Ian was now more confused than ever. Paul began to walk away from Ian, arms swinging at his side.
“Remember that kidnapping last year, the one I got involved in?” Paul asked. Ian nodded, recalling when he heard about it, especially when he heard that Paul and several of his friends were involved. “Well, Ryan and Colin, the two guys I introduced you at the wedding, their kids Ethan and Lea were the first babies born from that operation.” Paul went on explaining. He then turned back around to face Ian, finally looking into his eyes. “It works.” Paul stated seriously and to the point.
“And you’re going through with this?” Ian gasped.
“Had the surgery two weeks ago.” Paul nodded.
“You… you’re really going to… have a baby?” Ian exclaimed, the last three words said softly as the realization hit him in full force.
“Hopefully, yes.” Paul blushed slightly, scratching the back of his head.
“Paul, you’re 50 years old! This could do some serious things to your health!” Ian exclaimed, incredulously. In the seventeen years Ian had known Paul, he had never expected his older friend to do something this risky.
“I’m well aware of the risks, Ian.” Paul narrowed his eyes.
“So why? Why are you doing this, and not Tony?!” Ian asked, throwing his arms in the air. Paul looked back down at his stomach, hand resting on it.
“I… I wanted… want to be a father. When Sarah was alive, we were hoping of having a baby, especially after we got officially married, but…,” Paul paused, his voice wavering slightly as he remembered Sarah’s fate, “but after… I didn’t think I had the chance. Then I thought about adoption, especially after going to China. And then the whole Lolita business happened, plus reuniting and marrying Tony, I finally had the chance, the opportunity to be a parent. But when we went to get the preliminary check, we were hoping Tony could be the… well, the “mama”, but due to Tony’s, erm, ‘past demons’, the docs were worried how it would affect the baby, so I volunteered instead. So… there it is.” Paul explained, staring at Ian, who stared back in stunned silence. Paul sat back down in the chair he was sitting in previously and sighed, catching his breath, his hand never leaving his stomach.
Ian shook his head, trying to get his mind working after letting Paul’s speech sink in. He then walked over to Paul and gently touched Paul’s hand that was resting on his stomach. Paul looked up at his friend, his blue eyes filled with worry and confusion.
“If you need any advice, any help with pregnancy and/or kids, I’ll be here to help. Remember, I’ve got two of my own at home.” Ian stated, a smile on his face.
Paul stared at his friend in surprise before smiling. “Thanks Ian.” Paul said.
“Just as long as you don’t have the baby during the show, I’ll give you a hand.” Ian laughed softly.   Paul chuckled at the thought.
“A-and you’re not offended by this? I thought for sure you’d be.” Paul asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, it is quite shocking, yes, but this operation can really help people, couples, families who want a child, but can’t or having troubles doing so. Hearing your reasoning for having children and… well, now knowing you are…,” Ian smiled, laughing slightly, “I can’t change your mind now, can’t I?” Ian remarked.
“Nope.” Paul shook his head, before laughing.
“You’re going to be quite a dad, Paul… or mom in this case.” Ian stated, grinning cheekily. Paul shot the shorter man a glare.
“Don’t even think about it. I maybe the one being pregnant here, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna be called “mom”, got it.” Paul stated with a soft growl. Ian just kept on grinning.

Still working on the story, so it will still be some length between each part.  Besides that, enjoy
