Dog wants something. No clue what. She keeps nosing at my hand as if I've forgotten something (normally this means "dude, where is my half-past-eight crackdog treat!", but she has had that tonight already), and is being all pushy and I just- I am a cat person! I don't speak dog! I am confused!

What is it, Holly ( Read more... )

I know I'm really late on this, but have I missed the post where you got your own apartment with a roommate who has a dog / are housesitting / are a houseguest? *confused*

In Leo-speak, this means:

Give me a treat (dog treat).

Give me a treat (ice).

Give me a treat (a box, which I will tear up, try to eat, and then make mournful eyes at you when you throw it away).

I need to go outside.

No, really, my back teeth are doing canoe races, hurry UP.

or

I want to snuggle. Give me your lap. All of it. Back AWAY from the computer. LAP SNUGGLES!

hope that helps for the future? ;) Of course this *is* the dog who demands that I phone him when I'm away, and then does his "timmy in the well" impression (complete with whining), because MOM IS TRAPPED IN THE PHONE. TRAPPED, I TELL YOU! DO SOMETHING, HUMANS! so yknow. grain of salt, etc.

I suspect last night was either option 1 or option 6 (probably option six. Despite the fact that if she could stand upright from nose to tail she's about as tall as I am. *snerk*), and I know at least it wasn't "I need to go ouuuuuuuuuut" cos the door to outside was still open then. But that is very helpful, yes, thank you, cos I have NO experience here and it makes me all paranoid and stuff.

And awwww and HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Ohh, puppies. *pets Leo*

Just remember, dogs are, by and large, snuggly creatures who rarely aren't in the mood for a cuddle (as opposed to cats, who will very much make with the LETTING YOU KNOW if they deign to be snuggled, and it is on THEIR schedule tyvm human.) Some dogs are a bit funny about the computer, and Leo is one... 80% of the time, he's fine, but the other 20%, the computer is his main rival for my attention, and he *will* nose me endlessly (often knocking my hands completely *off* the keyboard, cause he's tall enough to do that without even stretching) until I go "Okay, okay, your turn" and make cooing "who's my good boy? Who's my big pain in the ass who won't let me finish my email, huh? Is that you? yeees, he's my big pain in the ass..." (all in a very affectionate voice, mind you. Dogs don't give a damn *what* you say as long as it *sounds* good). And then he'll wag like hell and cuddle for a few minutes and wander off to line up his toys. (Yes, line them up. My dog has OCD, I swear).

Crystal-speak (my service dog) is so very similar to Leo-speak, with the exception of the box. For her, it's:

Take this toy and throw it. Come on, you know you want to! Fine, I'll use it as a pillow and pout.

Forgot to say. I often think Leo and Crystal somehow conspire.

"Okay, I'll want cuddles today. You nudge to get some play time. You know they can't deny us anything!"

Awwwwwwwwwww! But yes, thank you - it is reassuring to hear from people who actually know dogs whereas I am mostly like "uh, dogs... are animals which are cute but live with other people and I see them on tv?" :D
