We've been snowed in for a week and it's been awesome--an impromptu house vacation that's let me a) actually clean my house properly for the first time in...not telling how long, b) get out drafts of two or three new items for my thesis, and c) read the new Toni Morrison (quite good), an old Haruki Murakami (mostly good) and the latest Kim ( Read more... )

My super talented friend... I'm so proud of you! I'm glad things are going well for you, in just about every way.

Just curious... which is the new Toni Morrison? I was looking at her books just yesterday, and almost bought one, but wasn't sure what to read. Now that I'm done with McInerney's output, I need something new... give me a list??

Aw, thanks hon. The new Morrison is called A Mercy. It was the tamest of all her books so far, I think, and therefore the least compelling to me. Beloved is a must-read, but my favorite of hers is, strangely, her least-respected: Paradise.

And a list? I've been on author binges this year, reading all the books an author's written, though not always in order. My favorite books lately:
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Haruki Murakami
Jimmy & Rita, Kim Addonizio (not her newest one, but it's a novel in poems--doesn't *sound* promising, I know, but it'll break your fuckin' heart. It's amazing.)
Set This House in Order, Matt Ruff
The Road, Cormac McCarthy (I know, everyone's a-flutter about this book, but it lives up to the hype. Outter Dark is my fav from him, but The Road is probably a more important contribution literarily.)

I should stop there. I have many more to recommend, but I'll stop blabbering. And you, missie, still need to gimme a call. :)
