Day 03 - A movie that makes you really happy
I grew up as a Trekkie. My dad introduced me to the original series when I was tiny, and some of my first fanfic (before the computer age even) was based on the Trek films. I got into TNG as a teenager, and DS9, VOY, and even ENT followed suit. I've been collecting Trek paraphernalia since high school, and I even have a TNG science uniform in the closet. I'm about as geeky as they come.
When I heard that they were making a new film with young, hip actors, my initial reaction was abject horror. How could they reboot one of the greatest franchises ever to exist? And more importantly, who would play McCoy?!
Some of the casting horrified me initially--John Cho? You mean the guy from Harold and Kumar is going to play Sulu? What? And Sylar is Spock? And Simon Pegg is Scotty? Really? Karl Urban would be okay, and this Chris Pine guy--he seems fine. But why was so much of the press about Kirk and Spock? What about the triumvirate of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy? They can't forget that. It was the core of the series. Those three guys.
I was sure this would be a disaster. Even after I saw a teaser trailer of the Enterprise being built, I was still skeptical.
I still remember the day I officially stopped worrying and climbed on board the fun train. It was the day I saw this picture:
For some reason, that one shot of Bones and Kirk just clinched it for me. First of all, it was one of the first released pictures of McCoy and Kirk. But there was something about the expressions on their faces... They had me.
The film wasn't a disaster. It was brilliant. It successfully managed to reboot the franchise without mangling the old one.
I can now look forward to new Trek movies, and I can someday pass this franchise onto my kids, the way my dad did to me.
