Last month, Joe Quesada, the Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics made some self-congratulatory comments in light of the recent success of Brokeback Mountain. Wow. Thanks for posting that. I'd have never read it otherwise and I may have to pass that on. I am not much into comics, but what an interesting thing to say when this is truly what happened. Isn't that just flat out lying? How do you say something like that and then this is what "actually happened" with Marvel comics? To me, that is the utmost of tacky, unclassy, etc...............

Right now, at lot of people are really ticked off at Quesada. This was his idea of damage control (after he saw how angry people were that the Rawhide Kid was shelved), but he ended up making himself look like an ass.

To think that a month ago, he was bragging about the Rawhide Kid, and now, he's refusing to put the character in a book. He's alienating a large portion of his readership.

Well yeah! I'd say so! What about other people within the organization? Any ideas what they think or if they can even do anything about it?

Everybody's pretty much at the mercy of the Editor-in-Chief. A lot of the writers want to depict gay characters in a healthy light, but the editors often resist. When Northstar (the other character I mentioned) was first created, the editor would not let writer John Byrne say that the character was gay. After they finally gave the green light to bring Northstar out of the closet, the press and the gay rights organization got all excited and decided to applaud Marvel for their bravery and contribution to increased tolerance. But Marvel? They didn't want to comment.

This is from a writer at Marvel, Peter David about that: When You Wish Upon a NorthstarIn light of that, you can see why people are so concerned about the recent controvery ( ... )
