Lestrade is an Omega, John is a beta, and Sherlock is an Alpha.
Lestrade goes into an unexpected heat. John is with him and he gets John to call Sherlock because they have shared a heat before and Greg would rather it was Sherlock than anybody else. John stays with him to keep him safe. But John kinda smells like Sherlock because they share a living space so Greg keeps trying to smell him and get as close as possible. This means that when Sherlock arrives he also smells like Greg.
When Sherlock arrives John tries to leave them to it but they convince him to stay. (would prefer that they didn't force him too, but thats up to the writer)
