Bike Maintenance

I need to clean up my bike and do routine maintenance. Has anyone ever used one of those chain coming gizmos? I've forgotten much of what I used to know about my bike--as well as forgetting that it needs doing. But taking it into the shop for everything is expensive and time consuming. Suggestions welcome. I ride my bike most days this time of year
