Using other pokemon if you can. If you switch out, the weaker one still gets stronger and you can defeat shit with the already strong pokemon.

If you don't have any others, try waiting out metapod.

That seems similar to what I have been doing, yes.

It's the only way I've found. Hypothetically you can try TMs, but they don't work on magikarp and they're not really that strong anyway.
