It's the cheery theme music, isn't it?
When I was writing HP fic, I once worked on a story that had The Archers as a Wizarding Wireless programme licensed out to Muggle radio as a way to make money off the general populations whilst manipulating them through magical means -- a sort of wireless Confundus spell. Whenever the wider world needed some mass rewriting of their memories, The Archers was the way to get it done. Of course, it served the same purpose in Wizardom. No one could ever say why on earth they listened to the sodding programme, it wasn't that they actually found it entertaining, but still it was a compulsion and wherever they were if they once heard the theme begin, they were transfixed to the spot until it was finished. And then the Ministry would get through whatever idiotic thing they'd been having difficulty selling to the public -- one episode of The Archers and poof! no further grumbling from the witch on the street. I'm a bit annoyed I missed the ending of the William/Nic relationship though -- I was looking forward to relishing Will's pain. Harsh, I know, but he is fictional.
