Summary: It being Sheldon and Penny's undeniable perfectness for each other.
Disclaimer: Not even a little bit

The first time Leonard sees it, he is taken by obvious surprise.

“Sheldon, were you just holding Penny’s hand?”

Sheldon gave him a double look, as if he had never heard something so ludicrous in all his life.

"What are you talking about, Leonard? I was not doing any such thing.”

“Yeah,” Leonard nodded, “I’m pretty sure you were.”

Sheldon shook his head, “ You may have simply seen a trick of the light, an optical illusion if you will.”

Leonard frowned, a little confused. He knew what he saw. He was walking into the apartment and looked up, only to see Penny’s hand slip from Sheldon’s grasp.

When Penny came towards him on the couch, giving him a kiss, he studied her.

She looked down at herself, “What? Is something on me?”

Sheldon scoffed, “Leonard believes that you and I were holding hands when he came in.

Penny barked with laughter.

Leonard gave her a piteous look, “Well, it looked like you were...”

Penny screamed with laughter this time.

“Wh-wha...” she could hardly catch her breath, “What makes you think that Sheldon would ever make me touch him?”

It was Sheldon’s time to frown, “You touch me all the time, Penny. Maybe too much. You seem to be a very sensuous person.”

“And you’re an android,” Penny shot back at him, flopping into the couch between them and grabbing the remote, “What’s on tonight, guys? A little Star Trek? Some Battlestar Galactica?”

“Actually, I purchased the first season of Sanctuary today,” said Sheldon, turning a little towards her.

Penny looked at him, confused, “Sanctuary? What’s that?”

And there began the Sanctuary saga, where Sheldon insisted she watched the series from the beginning, and Penny swooning over Amanda Tapping and Sheldon downloading the web series for her. Leonard felt like an outsider most of the time and opted to stay at work after hours.

..........................................

The second time Leonard sees it, he is very suspicious.

Penny had come over early that morning, greeted him with a kiss on the cheek and walked over to Sheldon, whispering harshly, “Loser.”

Sheldon glared at her in response.

“What happened last night?” Leonard asked.

Penny grinned while Sheldon pressed the lever on the Cylon toaster a bit roughly.

“We played classic Mario Brothers into the wee hours of the morning and I beat his score,” Penny recounted, “Every single time.”

“The level of technology in a classic Mario Brothers game is primitive compared to the technology today, Penny, and therefore only proves you are apt at outdated technology,” Sheldon shot back at her.

“Oh yeah?” she passed by him, gave his butt a pat, “That doesn’t explain why I cream your ass at Halo.”

Leonard laughed. Then he stopped.

“Wait. Penny?” Leonard said it slowly, hardly believing he was saying it, “Did you just slap Sheldon on the ass?”

Two pairs of eyes, one green, one blue, widened in shock and surprise.

“What?” said Penny.

“You just went like...” Leonard indicated with his hands, “...to Sheldon!”

Penny came over and felt his forehead, “Are you okay, Leonard? You’ve been talking crazy recently.”

“I’ll get my thermometer,” said Sheldon.

“I’m fine you two. But I could have sworn...”

He looked from one oblivious face to the other.

“Is there something you two aren’t telling me?”

But the look on their faces suggest that they have no idea what he’s talking about.

The next few weeks are hectic at work. He comes home every evening to see them locked in vicious games of classic Mario.

...........................................

The third time Leonard sees it, he’s jealous as hell.

Imagine, he walked into Sheldon’s office to see his girlfriend sitting on his desk! Said girlfriend didn’t even tell him she was coming to the university, nor did she come by his office to say hi. But here she was, on Sheldon’s desk, her legs crossed at the knee, in a pair of tiny beige shorts and a striped pink and blue top that hugged her like second skin, leaning in and smiling as she spoke. Sheldon is even smiling back a little. What the hell?

He cleared his throat, and they looked up.

“Oh, hey Leonard!” Penny got up and walked past him, “I’m gonna go...”

She gave him kiss and left.

Sheldon didn’t tell him why she had been there, and he didn’t ask. But questions revolved around his head all day.

Then later, when he was in Penny’s apartment, every other sentence had a certain person’s name in it.

“...Sheldon helped out so I could win that contest on the radio...”

“...and then I introduced the girls to Sheldon. They totally hated him, but that doesn’t matter...”

“...and I was like, ‘It’s the same apple, Sheldon, what does it matter if I bit into it first?’”

“...when I called Mary in Texas, she told me to just get a grilled cheese sandwich and put it by the door and Sheldon will come right out...”

“Penny, stop talking about Sheldon!” Leonard finally shouted.

She looked at him, like he was the crazy one.

“Sorry. It’s just that Sheldon...”

“Don’t say Sheldon,” said Leonard.

.................................................

The forth time Leonard sees it, he’s confused.

And angry. Very, very angry.

Because how can you ditch your boyfriend for a whole night to go to some fancy dinner party with his best friend?

“He has to bring a date, Leonard,” Penny had her arms folded, the short, emerald green number she planned on wearing draped over her arm.

“Why can’t you get one of your friends to go with him?” Leonard asked.

“None of my friends like Sheldon. They all say he’s hot, but they don’t like him.”

Leonard forgot what he was going to say, and stared. Penny’s friends thought Sheldon was hot?

Eventually, Penny won the argument and she went with Sheldon. Leonard comforted himself with beer, microwave popcorn and a Twilight Zone marathon.

When they came home (at three in the morning!) Leonard heard them outside the door, participating in the longest goodbye he had ever heard. He almost called Guinness World Book of Records.

Then, for some reason, Penny decided to come over to 4A instead of going home, hanging on to Sheldon’s jacket and trailing behind him.

When they spotted him on the couch, the looks of surprise were enough to answer the questions in his head.

“You two had a good time?” he asked sarcastically.

He went off to bed and left them there, framed by the door, looking at him.

Penny came in his room a little later, pulling off her dress and nestling beside him in her sexy lingerie that told him was all for him. They fool around, and Leonard was content enough to ignore the little voice at the back of his mind and go to sleep.

........................................

The fifth time Leonard sees it, he wants to throw up.

Because they’re making out. They’re making out right in front of him.

He doesn’t think he’s seeing things now. They are definitely making out in Sheldon’s spot, Penny is definitely straddling Sheldon, and their faces are definitely fused together by the lips.

He cleared his throat, and Penny jumped off Sheldon like there was a spring between them.

“Leonard!” she shrieked.

He shoots her a look and walks back out the door.

He doesn’t go back to the apartment till the next morning.

When he walks up the stairs, the two of them are coming down, twin looks of concern on their faces. They stop when they see him.

“Leonard,” Sheldon starts, then Penny grabs his hand and he stops. It makes Leonard want to regurgitate the Kentucy Fried Chicken he had eaten while he was on the road the night before.

“Leonard I’m sorry,” Penny said sincerely, “I didn’t mean to kiss him...”

“Yes you did. Don’t lie,” Leonard told her. He wasn’t even angry anymore. He was way past all those other stages of loss. He admitted it to himself that he had accepted it now. Penny wasn’t his anymore.

Penny looked close to tears. Sheldon was looking at his shoes.

“I gotta get ready for work,” he said, brushing past the two of them.

.................................................

The sixth time Leonard sees it, he wants to hit them both over the head.

Because all they did now is stare at each other. Constantly. Whenever they were within glancing distance. The endless staring was accompanied by zoning out, even in Sheldon’s case, and Sheldon only zoned out when something he was passionate about was in front of him.

And Penny was acting like a tragic princess; every time they were together, she got this look, and he knew the fifteen millionth apology was coming.

“Leonard...”

“Penny, if you apologize again, I’m gonna crack the DVD in two.”

He held up the Clueless DVD he had gotten to cheer her up.

The two of them began on their rocky road back to friendship eventually, but Penny and Sheldon continued to stare at each other; over the top of his head, during commercials, between bites of Thai food, over the game consoles and from behind their menus and notepads at the Cheesecake Factory.

One night, he came home to see them standing in front of their respective doors, drinking each other in like jugs of water. He rolls his eyes.

“Jeez, you two, kiss and make up already!” he yelled at them.

He chuckled when he saw their eyes widen, and they turned to stare at him instead.

......................................

The seventh time Leonard sees it...

Well, he doesn’t see it, he hears it.

A loud, keening scream coming from Sheldon’s room. And it definitely was not Sheldon.

Leonard sat upright in bed, hearing the moans coming through the thin wall, wondering how the hell he was supposed to feel about this.

It was Penny, his dream girl, moaning and screaming in a way he never made her moan and scream.

Leonard’s head went back to all those times when they were together, when she would suggest that they make out or even have sex in Sheldon’s spot (they never got around to the sex, but they did make out in his spot quite a lot). He guessed he should have been smart enough to see it for what it was. She was always curious about Sheldon. Always. From the first time they met, Leonard could see that she found him fascinating, and even when they began to fight, they got closer and closer instead of further apart. Leonard swung his legs off the bed and went to get some water in the kitchen.

He got past Sheldon’s door in time to hear Penny scream out again.

The next morning, Leonard couldn’t believe it, they were as civil and polite to each other as friendly strangers.

“Morning, Leonard. Morning Sheldon. You guys got any milk?”

“Good morning, Penny. And yes we do have milk. It’s in the fridge, if you’d like to help yourself.”

“Oh, sure. Thank you.”

Leonard chuckled. They were still in hiding. Still trying to keep it cool, under wraps. He could see the bandages unraveling, even as Penny leaned on the fridge and took an appreciative and longing stare at Sheldon’s back, her eyes lidded in a satisfied way.

Leonard picked up his satchel and headed for the door.

“Oh, by the way, you guys. Next time you have sex, mind keeping the noise down? Some people are trying to sleep.”

He smiled in satisfaction at the scandalized look on Penny’s face.

......................................

The eighth time Leonard sees it, it reminds him of those romantic movies he’s watched.

They were at the airport and Penny was flying to Hawaii for three whole months to shoot a Baywatch spoof.

He stood there with his hands in his pockets, watching Sheldon and Penny as they telegraphed messages with their eyes.

Raj and Wolowitz stood beside him, unaware of this whole Sheldon and Penny thing, and not noticing the things that are out of the ordinary. Like the fact that Penny was holding onto Sheldon with a death grip.

Leonard was waiting for the shoe to fall, for it had to fall sometime, and what better time and place than now, when she was going away for all of three months?

“Bye, Penny,” Sheldon said in a friendly but standoffish way.

“Uh, yeah. See you,” Penny said in about the same way. They didn’t even hug, but this was ‘normal’, the fact that Sheldon wasn’t big on embraces, so Raj and Howard didn’t see it as suspicious.

She hugged the rest of them, turned around and walked away.

But before they could turn to walk to the parking lot she was running back, flinging her arms around Sheldon and kissing him hungrily. He was kissing her back just as urgently as she was kissing him.

“I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you as well, Penny.”

“I’ll call you as soon as I get there.”

“Okay.”

“Don’t go on any dates while I’m gone.”

Sheldon laughed his funny little laugh, “I won’t.”

They kissed again and she finally broke away from him, waving behind her as she moved away.

Raj and Howard had their jaws on the floor. Leonard just sighed in satisfaction.

.....................................

The ninth time Leonard sees it, he can’t help but laugh.

Sheldon going lingerie shopping.

It was like a one-liner. He had to laugh.

The man has never looked so shell shocked in his life. And he was glaring at Penny like she was the Ori come to earth; nothing but trouble.

“It wasn’t that bad, Moonpie!” Penny giggled, “And I though you would enjoy it, seeing that it was for your benefit.”

“How could something you were wearing be for my benefit?” Sheldon asked.

Leonard remembered back to the days when Penny would tel him that her sexy lingerie were all for him. He wondered for a split second if it really was, but it honestly didn’t matter anymore.

His phone rang and he answered. It was his girlfriend Emily.

Emily was no Penny. In Leonard’s opinion, she didn’t have to be. She was pretty, and smart and talented (she was a sculptor) and an absolute freak in bed. And bonus; she was four feet, eight inches tall. Penny liked her, Raj and Howard liked her, and despite the fact that Sheldon believed the bust she made of him was woefully inaccurate, he liked her too.

When he got off the phone with Emily, Sheldon and Penny are arguing playfully about whether or not her new purchases were for her or him, Sheldon arguing that he didn’t think he would be comfortable in women’s underwear, and Penny arguing that he didn’t have to wear them because she would.

“Yeah, that’s my cue to get out of here. I’m going to Emily’s,” he said and got out as quick as possible.

.................................................

The tenth time Leonard sees it, the four of them are on the couch (Emily in Leonard’s lap) and X-Files is on, and all of a sudden Sheldon turns to Penny and says, “I love you.”

First Penny’s mouth falls to the floor. Then her eyes tear up and her mouth gapes. Then she launches at him, kissing him feverishly.

“I love you too, Sheldon,” she says between kisses.

Leonard looks at Emily and she rolls her eyes.

“Don’t you just hate it when they get all sappy?”

Leonard smiled, “Not really.”
