I've been having mucho problems all day long with my computer. Freezes, constant shutdowns with no warning. At one point during a reboot, there was a huge red square on the screen - no, I'm not kidding

McAfee and Norton both use boocoo's of ram when you use them. I ditched both for AVG. There's a new version: 8.0 But you may want to download the free version of spybot and run it. It may be adware that's got you.
I had the newer version of AVG running before - just installed the upgrade about a week or so ago.
There've been no unexpected shutdowns since starting Firefox in a new session and I'm really wondering if it was that vodka website that was doing me in.....
Trying to decide if I should reinstall AVG when I get home from the temp job tomorrow just to see what happens.....

I found a couple of geeks via an LJ community called pittsburgh - one of them has been walking me through a few things and I'll probably wind up bringing him in to clean things up and maybe even adding some RAM when I get a few shekels to rub together.
I've never used Geek Squad, but everyone I know who has, had nothing but terrible problems with them. From what they told me, they're less than worthless and can't diagnose even the most basic problems. In one case, all they needed was a new power supply, but were told the whole computer was dead and they needed to get a new one.
For anti-virus, I use Trend Micro, haven't had a problem with it yet, but I'm also very careful about my browser settings. I only use Firefox, never IE, and clean my computer regularly with AdAware(Spybot is comparable)
