GAH! So if I'm just bumming around on LJ (or facebook, or email, or whatever other time wasters), the chances my computer randomly restarts are much lower than when I'm actively trying to fix it ( Read more... )

What AV software requires SP2 to work?

I think the reason it's suggesting that is that your computer makes a backup image before upgrading majorly, so if you have to go back to that, it wants it to be clean.

I'd try Spybot S&D first, and see if that'll get rid of it, and then maybe one of the online virus checkers. They're not perfect, but they're free and that'll get your low hanging fruit.

If I were local, I'd come clean it up for you. It's hard to do long distance.

I have the same question, what AV needs SP2 or later? I know Norton 09 does, but who else? Do you need AV? PM and I can mail you some that I have gotten as samples and just never used.

What AV software requires SP2 to work?

AVG Free v.8.5; AVG is what came on my computer (pieced together from a friend), and it says it can't upgrade from 7.5 because Windows is out of date.

Tried S&D, only found a bunch of cookies: 113 on first run, 90 when run immediately thereafter :/ That's when I figured maybe I should try to update my antivirus.

Online virus check? Who what where?

Have you tried Avast? Is free and I think would work w/o SP2. It's caught several viruses on my system.

I have never even heard of it until this moment. Their website says it's only free for a 60-day trial. Is that worth it? My computer's old and doesn't have much memory etc., and I'd hate to clutter it up with free-trial software a dozen times over :(

That's the professional version. The home version is free, no expiration.
