Geek frustration

GAH! So if I'm just bumming around on LJ (or facebook, or email, or whatever other time wasters), the chances my computer randomly restarts are much lower than when I'm actively trying to fix it.

That doesn't bode well.

In trying to figure out where I left off the other night, I came across a suggestion that I should make sure that the computer is free of viruses, spyware, etc. before trying to install service pack 2 for windows xp. But how am I supposed to do that if I think I'm already infected, and need to download it in order for the antivirus software to work?

::bangs head on desk::

I could just give up and hope this new job comes through, and spend everything I'll earn above bills on a Mac. Maybe. If no other expenses come up. ::sigh::
