My first shot at vegan pizza

Nov 06, 2006 11:01

I have to admit that I'm not really missing cheese anymore, but I do miss things that went well with cheese... like pizza, for example. This weekend I made my first ever cheeseless pizza. It's the Tempeh Sausage Fennel pizza from Vegan with a Vengeance (VwaV).

I found the furk kind of worrisome. Jon made me a sandwich with it, and it was almost too much like real meat.

Yeah, the fake meat usually worries me, too. The tofu roast would likely be less scary, though. Instead of being meat-like, it's more like a rounded dome of marinated tofu that is baked around stuffing. It's actually not very likely that I'll get around to making it, though, since it would require me doing a lot of baking on Friday night.

Will you be joining us for the dining event this weekend?

Unfortunately, no. The menu sounds amazing, though.

I think I might be able to swing being there next weekend, so long as I can set up an interview for next Friday.

Wish you could be here!

Good luck on the interview. I hope all the pieces come together for you!

That sausage looks excellent! T and I both love tempeh, and I'm a big fennel fan. Oddly enough, I've never once seen it listed as anise, though I have both Anise Seed and Fennel Seed as spices from the same company, and always thought there were slight differences in the plants (though the seeds only vary in length).

I'd probably scrap the potatoes for a traditional onion, tempeh sausage, mushroom and green pepper pizza.

The best toppings I've found to bind a pizza, replacing the cheese, are baked spinach drizzled across the top of everything (chopped or whole leaf: try both), and baked eggplant slices. Mmmm mm.

I would be happy to share the recipe for the tempeh crumbles. It really is good. I've also used it for biscuits and gravy. mmmm

Having it with onion, green pepper, and mushrooms sounds pretty yummy. And I'll definitely try the spinach and the eggplant, too. Now, if only I could figure out a way to make the crust calorie free. :)
